RE: What other hobbies do you guys / gals have ?

    Cheers guys.

Gimme a couple of days to find the book (I have the transcript in front of me at the moment) and I’ll scan in a few pages and send ’em to you both. Wont do it just at this moment cos the C*rlsb*rg is getting the better of me…tastes infinatly better than the water and its also cold !!!…and its getting late here so apologies for any typos !!.

Kev…if you could find out if details of the guy, it’d be bladdy brill (and I’ll bear in mind your request). I understand that there is a sort of who’se who type of library for the Army at Aldershot (which is only about forty miles from my home in the UK) but I didn’t get the chance to visit before moving out here.

As I say, check your e-mails in the next few days.

    Cheers

RE: What other hobbies do you guys / gals have ?

    Key Kev

    WW1 as well ?.

a few years ago at a car boot sale in Exeter, my parents brought me an old Shell Aviation Petrol can and the guys who sold asked if I was interested in avaition cos he had an old log book and flying helmet I could have. Naturally dad said yes so next weekend went along and sure enought the guy had the stuff and gave them to dad gratis.

    Flying logbook my a***e.

Its a Field Message book used for taking signals and such like and the helmet I beleive is a dispatch riders cloth helmet (complete with leather ear cups and a neck extension). Both items have the owners name clearly printed and the message book has a draft letter to the owners sweetheart / wife dated two days after Armistice !!!.He did scribble over it to make almost unreadable but I have managed to get around 70% of the letter made out. There are dates for rugby matches between various units, parade details, personnel who are good at carpentry, regimental numbers and names all clearly laid out in this book.

There are numerous events and the dates are all very very shortly after the end of the war. Bloody intereting reading it is.

I would like to find out one day who this guy who owned it originally is and what unit / regiment he served in and if it still exists today. If it does then I am hoping that they would have a museum or such like that I could loan the items to rather me having them in a cardboard box.

If you are interested, I’ll e-mail you the transcript of the letter.

RE: Another one for Uncle Keith – Pitch & Torque?

    Neilly

Not too uptodate on model props but I am a Safety Boat Cox out here for one of the Island clubs and we have a newish (okay we’ve had it about eight months) Rib…bit like the RNLI use…you know a boat with a huge inflatable ring round most of it). On it backside is a 100HP fourstroke that was originally fitted with a 19″ pitch prop (on boats a 19″ pitch prop will move forward…less slippage…19 inches for one revolution) and this used to give us a top whack of around 32 MPH. One day it got totalled by a tyro so we experimented with a 21″ pitch prop. initial pick up once we firewalled the loud lever was marginally slower but the top end increase to 43 MPH was pretty spectacular. Interestingly, max revs dropped to around 5500 with the 21 but could exceed 6750 with the smaller pitch prop so we had to introduce a rev limit so as not to wreck the outboard. The pickup with the smaller prop was a damn site faster than with the bigger one right across the rev range and the engine , while not ‘bogging down’ with the 21, ‘felt’ as though some of its getup and go had got up and gone and was noticeably slower with the same amount of persons onboard at the same revs.

Dont know if the above is any use, but thought I’d pass it on anyways.

    Cheers

    Gary
