For information to all that participated:

This exact same question has been posted on a number of forum sites (local, regional, USA focused and UK/Europe) as well as a number of facebook sites I am associated with. With the sites ranging from personal through general interest to special interest.

The question has resulted in a surprising number (at least to me) replies and 2000+ views of the question as of this Monday morning.

What I have found very insightful, considering the diverse range of places it has been posted, is the consistency in the “meat” of the comments.

The majority, regardless of region, country, focused interest or general interest are looking for the same things in a museum (of pretty much every type).

All of the comments are being used to create an information base for future planning, additional research as well as the basis for ongoing visitor consultation and sharing with other museums and heritage institutions.

    Been an interesting project

    Thank you everyone again

In my defence on this one – I’d offset today’s response with the time that I spent on the telephone with the consultants in Canada for various development projects for Tom; hence the 😉 icon in my first post on this thread! 🙂

    Yes in fairness to TO…
NEAM and Twin Otter have been very helpful in sharing opinions and thoughts on operations and ideas, I consider them a very valuable International partner.

Thank you again your help has been greatly appreciated.

Thank you everyone for your views…

The parameters of our site have changed once again so we are re evaluating the direction we are headed.

More comments and thoughts greatly appreciated and encouraged!

It’s nice they took the trouble to make her airworthy for the ferry flight. A lot of other places would have scrapped it and just found another 737…there are plenty around.
There can’t be many 737s on display, I know the Museum of Flight in Seattle has the prototype….

Sorry everyone for not replying sooner but it has been a very hectic time.

    J Boyle

The reason it was so important to save this aircraft is the specific historic provenance.

It is an original PWA aircraft having come into service at the Edmonton Downtown airport in 1979, it’s history from there to it’s retirement is really the story of Alberta and the Jet Age.

It was far too valuable, historically, to lose.

As far as 737s on display there are not many…that I know of:
    – Seattle Museum of Flights as you mentioned
    – The Alaskan Aviation Museum in Anchorage
    – Ours

and ours as evidenced is the only one that was maintained and kept operational (more or less) and running.

Ours has been an important part of Education and trades programs as well as toured by tens of thousands.

Thanks for the kind words all.

I hadn’t realised this had happened : Closure of the remaining runway was announced at an Edmonton City Council meeting on September 26th, 2013. On December 1, 2013 ERAA will place barricades on the remaining runway 12/30 to prevent access to the runway, and the runway will be clearly marked to signal to pilots that it is closed.

Does this limit the future for the museum at its current site?

First off thanks everyone, not like we needed another challenge.

    To David

Yes it does limit the ability of the Alberta Aviation Museum to grow which is what has driven the process.

With the area we are now restricted to and having (2) major funding streams cut off with the closure of the airport, Canada’s oldest and arguably most historic BTW, the collection was going to have to be reduced and the mandate restricted in addition being cut off from additional space meant our restoration department was going to be forced offsite due to changes in the building code when the new heating system is installed (we are currently grandfathered).

Our mandate has always been (to paraphrase) Edmonton, Alberta with a focus on the North, Northern Canada and Canada as relating to Edmonton and Alberta.

With the space restriction the Alberta Aviation Museum will only have room to present Edmonton’s history well and even then it will be difficult.

The new museum will pick up the balance of the mandate and be a different kind of museum so they complement rather than compete.

But as someone once said…difficult times call for bold solutions.

    We can make this happen

I had the privilege to visit this museum a couple of years ago and would like to say what a friendly and helpful place it is.
I hope the problems can be quickly resolved and the museum can continue as is.
If you start an online petition I would be only to happy to sign it.
    Best wishes for the future

    Roger

    Thanks Roger and all.

As a private citizen of Edmonton and not the Executive Director of the Alberta Aviation Museum Association

Petitions have been very ineffective with this administration and as we are in the middle of a Civic election there are no politicians to lobby until November which is quite possibly too late.

I would ask anyone who wishes to take action…particularly those that have been here…to e-mail the following:

Simply saying that action needs taken to insure the Museum can survive and grow without dumping the Royal Canadian Cadet programs or other partner organizations, note the country you are responding from, it will make a difference.

This will get a reaction as this administration and council are far more influenced by Social media than anything else.

Tom does this presentation to a Canadian veteran have anything to do with your museum?

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-23946649

No I’m afraid this Gentlemen is not at our Museum, shame seems a great man.

We have some truly exceptional veterans of Bomber Command that are part of our museum, but what surprises me is how few have applied for the Bomber Command Medal. When I chat with them most feel it’s awfully late in the game to be getting to it.

That said I am glad they have finally gotten it issued…bout time.

The Starfighter is now complete for the Roll Out on the 17th of August.

Yes it is missing some 8/32 Flush screws…we used up all available in Northern Alberta and came up short some, we are also missing some instruments still held up in Holland. But thanks to the wonders of modern technology the holes are covered with plastic images of the correct instruments.

    But…
    The colours are correct
The markings are a dead match to the original 104651
All fairing tanks and other goodies are in place
    The paint work is flawless

and it looks as it did in 1980.

It has been a huge challenge but our team once again met the target and the aircraft will look awesome for the Saturday Roll Out ceremony.

Pretty good seeing as the containers arrived from Holland March 29th.

If you are in our area please join us for the ceremony, details are here

She is going to be stunning when she is complete…. What’s the story on the ex westjet 737?

    Ex-PWA via Air Canda

This is a fully operational Boeing 737 that was donated and is used as part of a series of programs we run in house as well as Police ERT training, Dog Training and TV/Movie Work.

She came into service on our airport in 1979 with PWA and retired to us from Air Canada in 2005.
She is maintained so all systems are operational including engines and APU

745 is the PWA 737 still in here original colours.
