I’d be intrigued to find out Wessex
Emma,
I have a sneaking suspicion that the location is Ballykelly.
Eric
What are the clues?
Another from Coastal Command. Sadly, no names, dates or location this time:(
Peter,
I will private message you with information.:D
Sadly must depart, just as things are hotting up! Children need collecting and feeding, though the temptation to leave them where they are is growing….:D
My return will provide further details for you Peter and some more crew pics with yet another aircraft, but this time I shall keep my mouth shut as to is ‘species’!!!
I do know that he was out in Libya. There is a chance therefore that this snap was taken during his time spent with 221 Squadron.
You are right, 120 were in Iceland and Ballykelly. His log book confirms this.
The signature that is missing is that of Everett Howlett, who is far right of the picture, my Grandfather.
I have no idea who took the picture. How many crew members in the Lib? Perhaps he was another member?
Good to see another ‘local’ onboard. Welcome to the forum REF
I am speechless, which is unusual for me 😀
I have been to Kirkby many times and have been rather bemused by people coming out after a taxi run, for there is no emotion on their face………….
Having done it, I left with the same expressionless face! I was numb bereft of any emotion………….strange 😮
During the taxi run I spent most of my time in the Astro Dome for the best seats had already been taken! 😀
When the run finished we were taken to the cockpit where we were allowed to sit in the pilot’s seat and ‘play’ with some of the controls – the movement was incredible, like passing a knife through treacle!
Thanks to Guzzineil…………..
We booked in advance (last November!) it was the whole kit and kaboodle, the taxi run included.
The Spitfire was an added bonus announced on the day, thank God I took some extra cash, else I would have cried!
And there’s more!
If there is a published history of the Squadron, it is not readily found in either the British Library catalogue nor on http://www.bookfinder.com
I have a copy of ‘Dunsfold, Surrey’s Most Secret Airfield’ by Paul M McCue which refers to many characters of 180 Squadron and is a very good read. Worth a look.
Hi Colin,
I am searching for a squadron photograph of 180. Do you have any idea where I can look?
John Michael Killner was killed in October 1944 over his home village of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex and at the moment we still do not know why. His sister, now 80, would love to find out.
Any pointers or information would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
This was my youngest starting the firework display at Kirkby this weekend. I don’t know if she was shaking with excitement or cold! Fancy being only one draw away from a taxi in Just Jane – gutted!!
