Congratulations to Alan for saving VV400!

I think that the picture from Janes is part of the Cyril Peckham archive, which is now held by the RAF Museum, and was actually taken by Charles M Brown at Lasham. Here is another one. It is possible to see some other pictures taken at the same time:

Put VV400 into the search function in “Navigator”

Thank you all for the comprehensive answers. I assumed that the glider would have had a known history, and it does seem to have achieve quite a lot in it’s short existance.

The picture came from a article on gliding in a “General interest” magazine from 1937, that gave no information about the glider, or it’s achievements.

SF is correct about the pre-delivery test flying of Olympias at Redhill. Ann Douglas, Lorne Welch, Walter Morrison and Hugh Kendal were known as “The BGA No.1 Test Group.” Hugh Kendal was at the time a test pilot with Miles Aircraft. I apologise for the quality of the attachments, but I hope they are of interest.

I have the sister ship to Mr. Uuoret’s Oly, BGA 503 G-ALJP. This was named after another Derbyshire landmark, “Blue John.” I believe that several gliders based at Camphill in the ’40s were named in this way, another example being a Slingsby Sky “Kinder Scout.” My Oly is complete, and in better condition than the attached photograph might suggest, although there is much to do before it can be flown.

    Robert.
