Of course, if the USAF chooses the M346, they are, essentially buying a Russian aircraft 😀

    The Yakovlev Yak-130…….

Yes – I know that Finmecannica/Alenia have redesigned and re-engined it and are building it under licence – but it is still a Yakovlev design :diablo:

How about a westernized Hongdu L15. It’ll go supersonic. 🙂

I really do think that the SAS won’t get the NH-90 as it isn’t big enough to carry a couple of patrols at a time and doesn’t have the range for the ops deep into hostile territory

How about the Sikorsky CH-53K? It should have the range and heavy lift capability. A HMMWV fits in the cargo hold. It would be amazing if the SAS can deploy with their HMT400.

    Here’s another fantasy fighter.

Swept wing turboprop fighter designed by Pilatus around the Rolls Royce AE 2100 (4591 HP).. Equipped with Mauser Bk.27, Brimstone and Lockheed Martin Sniper XR.

This would be a great escort for helicopters like the MH-53K and MV-22 and can escort helicopters to their landing zone and provide CAS.

I’d like to see a modernised Boeing B-47 Stratojet with modern electronic warfare equipment and modern turbofans.:)

F-15’s are not GR4’s and they couldnt do the same job.

Saudi Arabia has some GR4, maybe they can be convinced to do a joint strike with the Israelis? 🙂 I mean, they must be concerned about the fallout of a war between Israel and Iran.

Let’s think a little outside the box.

    There are three major questions:
    — how to get there
    — how not to get shot down when/while there
    — how to do enough damage that it really counts

    How to get there:
Buddy-buddy refueling as the one option. Massively complex, since it requires two on the way in and two on the way out. All in lo-lo-lo profile. Use old F-4 with all the super-size-me tanks. One the refueling on the way in has done, hurry home (or somewhere else?) and get a new load to be in position to welcome the returning strikers.
Option two would be to use an UAV’d (or not, but optimally yes) old B747 as big fat tanker mama. Night time ops. Fake transponder codes and all. Remotely escort controlled by e.g. a twin-seater F-15. Should have enough fuel for everybody’s strike package needs. can also be used as a massive noise jammer. Crash when empty. On the way home the F-4s from above could come into play.

How not to get shot down:
In the dark of the night the Persians probably can’t intercept more than 2 or 3 vectors. That shouldn’t be too hard to deal with. Big question mark of course the presence of double-digit SAMs. SEAD is needed for the strike package. Would be a great first ops for MALD or whatever else there is. Lure those Tor-M into firing. Should also not be an unsolvable problem. Pretty straight forward.

    How to really hit hard:
MOP is a sissy. Build a bomb that *is* the aircraft. The Germans did it back in WW2. Take some old 747 or MD11 and put a 100 metric tonnes penetrator bomb with a rocket in the ass on the flight deck. Escorted UAV’d/remotely controlled like the tanker above, again fake ID if needed. Build one for each target. Over the target set the giant bomb free by blasting the surrounding airframe apart with detonation cord. Light rocket in ass and head down via GPS coordinates. Next best thing to the rods from God.

Stroke of genius after 3 beer!!

Some nice ideas there. Buddy buddy refueling is a good idea. I think the Israelis might have some technology that can help them avoid being shot down over Iran. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Orchard#Radar_detection They might have access to the Suter network warfare program. 3rd idea is great and there’s lots of old 747s around. They need to drop a MOAB after dropping the penetrator too 😀 Now’s a good time to attack while the Iranians are busy watching the world cup. :diablo:

what ever Isreal do, I would know they wouldnt mind having a couple of Squadrons of GR4’s – it’s the kind of job it could do so well.

I think they would love to have a few squadrons of TU-160 too 🙂

There’s nothing to stop Israeli ships patrolling the Persian Gulf, but basing would be very difficult indeed. Who would provide them with a base? Which Arab state?

Also, ships in the Gulf would be in the wrong place to intercept Iranian missiles aimed at Israel, unless those missiles were launched from SE Iran.

Yes..The missiles would actually have to chase the Iranian BM as they launch if they’re placed close to the Iraqi border or North Iran 🙂 Perhaps an airborne laser platform but basing will be a problem too.

Perhaps Israel can step up its efforts to quickly field Arrow 3 and also work on the next generation of ABM.

They could also start equipping their Navy with stealthy ships equipped with RIM-161 SM3 and Arrow 3 if possible and base them in the Persian Gulf.

Britten-Norman – who produced the twin-engined Islander and three-engined Trislander passenger aircraft – also proposed a three-engined freighter, called the Mainlander.

It was to be powered by 3 x RR Darts – the only image I can find is this crude profile showing a ‘RNZAF C.Mk.50 Mainlander’

…. there should be more out there….

    Ken

    Thanks Ken,

I didn’t know about the Mainlander concept. Would a tri-engine aircraft powered with Europrop TP400 be suitable as an A320 replacement?

What’s the likelihood of the V-22 winning this time?
Would be really nice to see the V-22 in the green and white livery.
I think it would look great.

IMO they are all ugly … It has to be something in RED and with a DRAGON … something like that !

    Deino

I think they’re all ugly too. The blue/white theme is the best of the lot. I’d like to see a bare metal polish theme. 🙂

The operation to attack Natanz is kinda like the movie Iron Eagle II. Great movie and filmed on location in Israel too. 😀

That sort of tanker support means the USAF. Israel has too few tankers to support all those multiple waves, & to get to Iraq, they’d have to fly over Turkey (blown that!), Syria, Jordan or Saudi Arabia.

Also, any such operation, with open US co-operation, would be hardly different politically from the US doing it itself, which could be done with far fewer operational & political (all those overflights) complications.

Yes, I think it would involve extensive tanker support from the USAF except that the operation will be highly classified and the tankers will be reported in the media as “Israeli AF tankers” escorting the strike package. It would be problematic for Israeli tankers to fly with the strike package over hostile airspace (Jordan/Saudi Arabia).

I doubt if the US will want to have another conventional war in the middle east with Iran deciding to attack Iraq which could occur if the US ran the operation to attack the Iranian nuclear facilities. The US can hardly afford it.

Using Israeli aircraft allows for deniability if any aircraft go down in Iran.

I think the attack will require US approval and be in multiple waves.

The aircraft will be refuelled more than once by tankers in Iraqi airspace allowing high speed dashes to and from Israeli airbases for rearmament. Initial attacks will use AGM-142 with 800lb penetrator warhead. They will have support from sea launched UAVs like Delilah UAV (battle damage assessment) and air launched Delilah cruise missiles for SEAD.
