here’s another link to the video about Japan’s stealth fighter. For those who have problems with the earlier link.

I think Japan should build it.

I noticed on the picture link you provided that the Tornado aircrews have white crosses painted across the back of their helmets. Anyone know why they do that?

    Say cheese.

I think it might be JH-7 or J-8 because the windshield is heavily framed.

I’ve seen some interception pictures where aircrews put funny messages or pretty women pics up against the Canopy. Anyone have any of those pics to post?

So, you think Japan is not serious about having Stealth on its fighters????

I think Japan is serious about stealth too, you can see this in the TRDI research but the Typhoon does have a low RCS especially from the front. For other aspects, it has up to 4 towed decoys and a sophisticated electronic warfare suite. Does the Typhoon have any optical/ir missile approach warning system?

Japan’s KC-767 can be equipped with two wingpod drogues and a centerline drogue refueling so the Typhoon’s lack of a boom receptacle is not a problem. Is the Typhoon’s data links compatible with the E-767 ??

I think the Typhoon is a really serious competitor if the F-22 can’t be exported.

Respectfully, the F-4 is way past its prime! Regardless, why not just purchase a small number of F-2’s as a stop-gap?

yup, Scooter, thats actually a good solution until the F-35 is available but the F-22 is the newest and has all the goodies , the F-2 just doesn’t appear good enough anymore.

That’s so crazy it would work. The X-32 was a pretty aircraft in my opinion. The F-35 is a plain jane.

I think the X-32 is a pretty aircraft as well. The F-35 is a conventionally beautiful aircraft, it looks like what we expect fighter aircraft to look like. The X-32 looks like one of those concept cars where its so different that the design has to grow on you.

The X-32 is not a bad aircraft IMO. Its just that they played it safe with the VTOL aspect. The lift-fan was a big gamble but it really paid off for Lockheed, but many air forces do not need the VTOL function. Since the X-32 would not have to be as compromised for the VTOL function, maybe a variant that sits between the F-22 and F-35 would work.

How about new F-4E’s with F414 engines, M61A2 lightweight Vulcans, new radar, glass cockpit, and wrap-around windscreens. 🙂

You all know you’d love it. 🙂

Hi PhantomII, I read about a PW1120 engined version being able to supercruise. I think with the F414, it would be able to supercruise with a substantial loadout. However, I think the aircraft would need alot of reworking, maybe rebuilt to replace corroded parts and a new composite wing (more wing stations). It would need new radars, towed decoys and something like spectra. In the end, the aircraft would have to be substantially modified to accomodate all this equipment.

I think the Japanese would prefer shiny new aircraft for all that trouble instead of upgrading their F4s. Also, the production line is already closed and there will be no export possibilities and spares will end up becoming a problem in the future.

I was thinking of Japan being a major subcontractor and launch customer. Just like the way the 787 was launched. They can help develop and configure the aircraft, e.g. Japanese radar, higher fuel faction than F-35, larger weapons bay. Maybe American avionics for the export version made in the USA.

By being a major subcontractor, maybe this can get around the export problems in Japan’s constitution. Maybe final assembly can take place in the USA with Vought being a subcontractor as well. I think that worldwide there are many countries that could be interested in the aircraft like Norway, Spain, Canada, Belgium, Denmark, Turkey, Greece etc. So far the F-35 has 3 committed customers, the US, UK and Australia.

The Mitsubishi F-2 program which is a variant of the F16 was launched with around 98 aircraft. In a way, the improved X-32 would be a variant and if Japan would commit to being a launch customer. Boeing could have a go at Lockheed’s pie.

But personally. I think this is all just fantasy lol and thank you for reading it.

I had this crazy idea. Boeing has already spent development money on a X-32 including a revised version with tailplanes.

The Boeing Super Hornet is not selling that well as an export aircraft because its too US Navy specific. Boeing does not have an export aircraft to compete with the F-35 in the international market once production of the Super Hornet ends. This could mean the end of Boeing’s military fighter division.

Kawasaki and Mitsubishi already have state of the art manufacturing facilities for large composite aircraft structures. They have fuselage and wing composite design and manufacturing know-how (Boeing 787, Mitsubishi F-2, Kawsaki C-X, P-X). They have advanced avionics know-how (F-2 AESA).

Since the F-35 does not appear to meet Japan’s requirements and the F-22 is off limits to US Allies. Boeing should get together with Mitsubishi and Kawasaki and get the Japanese to share the development costs of an improved, upsized version of the X-32. Something with twin engines, a larger weapons bay, larger fuel faction. Improved stealth etc. Final assembly could occur in the USA for foreign sales. Aircraft destined for foreign sales could have a software detuned version of the radar, Super Hornet avionics and a detuned FBW.
