IDEF 2011: EADS Cassidian and TAI sign Talarion MoU
EADS Cassidian has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the Talarion UAV programme at a ceremony at IDEF 2011 in Istanbul on 11 May.
The agreement will see both companies continue with the development of the next-generation Talarion MALE UAV to fulfil the existing requirements placed by France, Germany and Spain.
NOC Makes Antenna for B-2 Bomber
Northrop Grumman Corporation (NOC – Analyst Report) received a $372 million contract from the U.S. Air Force to design the advanced electronically scanned array (AESA) antenna system.
Under the terms of contract, the company will complete the preliminary design of the AESA antenna system, demonstrate technology readiness and prove its functionality using hardware prototypes. The new antenna system will increase the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber’s speed of sending and receiving battlefield information securely by satellite by up to 100 times than it can do so currently.
Thailand takes delivery of Airbus Military C212-400
Fitted with a specific kit, the main role of these aircraft is “rain-making” through cloud-seeding in the largely drought-affected country, as well as boosting water volume in dams. The C212 can also transport personnel, as well as bulky items thanks to the rear ramp. It has a 22 m3 cabin volume and is able to carry up to 2.8 tonnes of cargo.
China has successfully tested a medium-sized unmanned helicopter with a maximum takeoff weight of 757 kg.
Weifang Tianxiang Aerospace Industry conducted a flight test of the helicopter, model number V750, at a facility in Weifang City in Shandong Province on Saturday, the official Xinhua news agency reported Sunday.

Mothballed NZ Skyhawks find new homes
Six of the Air Force’s mothballed Skyhawk fighter bomber fleet have found new homes.
One will go to Tauranga aviation museum Classic Flyers, one to Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre in Blenheim, two will go to the Air Force Museum at Wigram and another to the Museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland and one will be sent to the Royal Australian Navy Fleet Air Arm Museum in Nowra, New South Wales, Defence Minister Wayne Mapp said today.

US Approves Sale of Second Super-Hercules to Israel

NZ Air Force Welcomes Upgraded P-3k2 Orion
The Royal New Zealand Air Force today accepted the first upgraded P-3K2 Orion from the Ministry of Defence during a short ceremony at Air Force Base Whenuapai. Chief of Air Force Air Vice-Marshal Peter Stockwell said the upgraded aircraft represents a significant advance in technology and will introduce a fundamental change to the capability of No. 5 Squadron as they transition from their traditional role as a Maritime Patrol Force to an Airborne Surveillance and Response Force.
