This cockpit section had already been sold, questions will be asked!!!!
Hi and thank you for your post.
Your wording could be interpreted by some as suggesting dodgy or underhand dealings and this is certainly not the case.
I chased up numerous leads on several cockpits, all with speculation on what was going to happen to them in the future. I avoided the speculation and contacted the people and the companies that owned them directly. I asked once about XH174 and was informed that it was still available, I made an offer, they accepted it and that is that, nothing underhand at all. I still have the emails too!
Your wording COULD also be interpreted as questioning my integrity, that is why I am setting the record straight now and out of the way.
In short, I made an enquiry with the company who owned it and they said it was still for sale, I made an offer and that was it. No dodgy dealings, not a very exciting story, just a very simple deal. So if there are any queries or questions, then please address them to the company who I brought it from, I cannot speak for them or contribute to speculation, it was still for sale and i purchased it.
I don’t know about you, but I’m on here to enjoy myself and not fall out with people! I have found this forum to be a great resource and the responses to be very positive, long may it continue.
Many thanks to you all,
James
good call but….60 years of Canberra!
Well spotted, maths was never my strong point, but the sentiment was there!
You only need to ask NAM, and I’m sure that plenty of us will keep an eye on her.
It would be great if we could sort something out, from our point of view it would be nice to put her on show, having been kept locked up for many years and it is fifty years of Canberra !
Canopy was with Retro.
Good to see ‘174 saved at last. I wanted it, but it’s oh so big !!! 😮
Cheers….
.
Hi Dave T,
I owe you a massive thank you! Without the link you sent me in January, in response to my very first post on this forum, I wouldn’t have started down the PR9 route, so technically its all your fault !!!!!!!
She is big, even sitting on the trolley in the unit, she’s as tall as our 18 tonner !
I wasn’t being evasive over the source of the canopy; I just didn’t want to get into trouble over advertising or anything like that!
Many Thanks,
James
I am gutted about Cockpitfest, as I would genuinely like to go and take the cockpit (even in its present condition), but we work in the event industry and the dates clash that weekend. It would also be a great opportunity to put some faces to names too.
I could easily drop the cockpit off there and collect it after, but I don’t know how the organisers would feel about it being just left there unattended?
There’s still time yet though!
She is completely, and I stress completely stripped out, with large pieces cut out too, but apart from that she is very solid. There are no major dents and no corrosion at all, which really surprised us.
Ross Mcneill has been really helpful, and let us have a good look around his PR9, without his advice we wouldn’t have took the plunge! He also put us in touch with the source for the canopy, but I don’t know if I’m allowed to mention the company I got it from on this site, am I?
I’m pleased with her as she is and we haven’t even started yet!
Spitfire MK IX Plans
Good afternoon folks.
On the plan front and not being overly technically minded myself, where would one go to find detailed drawings of a Spitfire MK IX, to enable someone who is technically minded to build a replica cockpit section?
There are so many different sites that appear when I do an internet search, that I don’t really know where to go?
Also can anyone please recommend any good books that cover the MK IX, including the cockpit?
Once again any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Many Thanks,
James.
On a personal note I have always avoided forums in the past, but have been overwhelmed by the positive support and advice that people have so kindly offered to me, over the previous few months.
Normally I have found that the people who have the wealth of knowledge and experience, are usually the least likely to want to share it. I am glad to say that this forum continues to prove me wrong on that front. Long may it continue!
P8 or P11 Compass ?
Before I buy the wrong one, could anybody please offer me some advice. Which compass would be more likely to be fitted to a MK IX Spitfire in 1944, a P8 or a P11?
Many Thanks
James
What type of camera is this please?

Advice
Thanks, for the link, I think I’ve managed to locate the same cockpit, but it lays elsewhere.
Before I bite the bullet, I’m after some advice please folks.
Initially I would be happy with an external restoration, so can anyone out there point me in the direction of a nose and canopy for a Canberra PR9, are they available, costs etc?
Secondly, as the pictures I’ve seen show it completely removed of EVERYTHING internally, are original panels, cables etc available?
I’m must admit that I’m not too concerned with the interior initially, as I have a life time to complete it, but I would just like an idea of what’s out there, before I go any further.
Thanks,
Jim
Positive Suggestions
Hi,
This is my first post, so please be gentle.
I’ve been collecting militaria and have restored various military vehicles over the past twelve years and now fancy a total change.
I am currently looking for a Canberra Cockpit Section, in any condition, as a project for restoration. Transporting and storage are not an issue, if anything this would be on the small side, compared to some of my previous projects.
The question is where to go and who to ask?
Any positive advice and suggestions would be gratefully welcomed.
Regards,
Jim .
