Paul I whole heartedly agree with you. I dont wish to sound flippant or insult those who died but 9/11 is getting to a rather weak excuse when it comes to the Heritage Aviation Industry & Movement.
Dont forget the nutters that caused that only took over aircraft that were in flight and I very much doubt they could get Tonka’s, Jag’s, Frightnings, F4’s or even a B17 or a Vulcan started let alone off the ground.
Now, back to my original thoughts:
If the CAA wont allow civillian flights of fast jets, other than the points already raised by FMk6John, & Lindy’s Lad (i’ll get onto one of his in a moment) is it time to try and join forces with the RAF to form a Historical FLight?
LL raised a good point about demilitarisation of Fast Jets, I had thought about this which is why I raised the above question.
Bex
The OFMC Phantom FGR mk2 was going to be flown, as Mark Hanna was a Rhino Jockey and still qualified on the Phantom, but his untimely death put pay to that, plus the project never reached the point where the CAA had to decide if it could fly or not.
The other problem with flying jets is their expense if you take into account spares, training, the cost of demilitarising them it is a completely differant proposal to a hunter or a bucc (neither of which are supersonic).
Plus i was once told that the reason the Lightning never flew in civil hands was in case it was put to illegal uses (especially after 9/11 ) and the RAF had concerns of policing such aircraft if something did happen.
Could you image then what a Jag or a Tornado could do especially as these are ‘modern’ war planes that do not suffer with the limits of the 1950s designs.

So are we dealing with a potential security issue or CAA stubborness? Ok I admit theres nowt that can catch a Lightning, but, Im pretty sure the RAF’s new toy (Typhoon 2) could catch a Tonka or Jag? Also this is why I suggest a charitable type RAF Historic Flight or something to that effect. Bex
having fiddled with Tonkas for a few years, and knowing how much work is required to get one in the air, i’d say, it would be virtually impossible to keep one in the air with just enthusiasts/volunteers, and the budget of the average volunteer organisation.
the ground equipment, test sets, specialist tooling etc…..the Tonka requires an awful lot of it!
This I understand, hence I said about getting together with the RAF. I dont want to cause a debate about the BBMF being renamed or tinkered with, but perhaps its now time for a Royal Air Force Historic Flight to be created with assistance from enthusiasts or volunteers? Bex
Sorry 🙁 i have quite a few old school photo’s of this one in either slide or b&w.
Its not your fault she was cut up, perhaps I should have been more specific, thank you for sharing that photo, but the actions of others bring a tear to the eye?
Good photo though Skud, under normal circumstances we could say one that wont be repeated, but as we all know, 3 Vulcans are / have been scrapped now all in less than 3 years…….. now that is sad 🙁 Bex
Ive bought instruments off Graham and Id say hes an honest chap, the same applies to another gent on this forum. Ok so he made a slight marketing faux pas, however, the question marks and his wording showed he didnt intend to rip anyone off.
Now, Im not aiming for brownie points, future discounts etc etc etc etc, but I have to ask this, of all other Evil Bay items we discuss on here and we’ve REALLY slated a few on here since I joined last November, cant we cut Graham some slack? Bex
Can i add my pics of the tailess Vulcan at Scampton taken in 1986
Now that brings a tear to the eye 🙁 Bex
I must have a vivid imagination.
Can only find incidents involving a DC-8 and a B727 connected with Mt.St.Helens.I was so certain about it but obviously wrong.
wawkrk
Although I am well known over in historic for my er Canberra fetish (as I was so informed today LoL) I also happen to like in a big way 2 of Boeings Big Birds, 747 – xxx & the 707 – xxx and I thought Id studied all the 747 incidents and I was beginning to wonder if Id missed one. Glad its cleared up at last. Bex

Thanks AJ, much appreciated 😀 Bex
Saunders Roe
There were 2 Saunders Roe Jets, both flown by one of my 2 favourite pilots, Capt Eric Brown CBE,DSC,AFC,RN. One is easy, it was a Jet fighter flying boat but the other I believe was supposed to be a high speed all singing all dancing bit of kit but it was scrapped and all the info was sent to the USA and low and behold Ol Chuck breaks the sound barrier. These are my choices, anyone got the proper names / serials for these aircraft? Bex
P.S: And before anyone says it, bet youre all surprised I aint mentioned the C word LoL
P.P.S: the other 8 are:
Avro Lincoln
Blackburn Firebrand
Sea Hurricane
Fairey Fulmar
Blackburn Roc
Fairey Barracuda
Sea Harrier
Vickers Valiant
If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one around to hear it, does it make a noise?
First…Find an uninhabited island that the Japanese were watching…would they believe the US? Would they think it was just an island filled with lots of conventional ammo set to go up in a spectacular fashion?
The Japanese had made their stance clear…fight ’till the last.
Why didn’t the RAF send a nasty note to Hitler saying…
“If you don’t shape up, we’ll bomb Dresden?”
Or…”We have this neat really secret bomb that destroys dams…in fact it’s so secret, we won’t even show it in the film that will be made ten years from now.
so please surrender or we’ll use it.If we want to play “what if” try this.
If you were Churchill & FDR and had the bomb in 1943, would you have used it to end the war that much earlier?
Imagine all the losses from D-Day and the final push into Germany being avoided…the concentration camps being emptied sooner.Seems to be about the same decision Truman faced in ’45.
As for the use of the bomb, I understand things a bit better now, the tree falling in the forrest was perfect thank you.
Although, my “what if” was about the types of aircraft, but your “what if” certainly raises a good point about the war in europe. Bex
John,
Firstly thanks for the prompt response, but I should have been more specific with my question.
You have many valid points with presnt display teams etc but I think I should have added this:
Once Tornados and other fast jets are withdrawn from service, like the Jaguars have been.
So once they have gone what do we do then? The CAA wont allow us to fly them, as with Lightnings and I believe there was a F4 Phantom preserved intact with the aim of flight?
Bex
Phil,
Nice to see youre ok Ol’ Chap 😀 A very interesting thread this one I have to admit especially with the varying views. SO I have a couple of things for you all to ponder over:
1. Was the atomic bomb able to carried by any other large WW2? This is a “what if” we didnt have the B29…… or was the bomb specifically designed for the B29?
2. I dont wish to seem rude with this question and it has nothing to do with PC gibberish, its mere curiosity:
Could we have dropped the atomic bombs on an uninhabited island to demonstrate its power or would this have been futile?
Bex
Peter,
Thanks for digging that out, I can safely say I thoroughly enjoyed that clip, brought back a few memories from my Rug Rat days. Bex
