    Thanks for the replies.

Hampden, that did cross my mind, but how would they know which airshow it was taken at if I ensured the photos didn’t show any obvious features? But it’s an interesting point, are there any pro photographers on here who have taken pics at an airshow then used it for publication, and if so did you pay royalties to the airshow organisers?

I have to disagree, I genuinely think there a plenty of forum members who would / will be pleased to see Vulcan fail just so they can say ‘I told you so’, completely missing the fact that another important aircraft will never grace our skies again. Anyway, looking forward to seeing her again at Yeovilton!

I’ve been trying to explain to my girlfriend why half of this aviation forum is happy that the Vulcan is flying and support it (in spirit or financially)and the other half do not. But I can’t ….

Ok so that’s it then, people aren’t happy that the Vulcan is expensive, unable to make a profit or even break even and the people who run it keep begging for money. Create an online petition to get it grounded because you’re sick of annoying emails, and don’t like the guy running the show. Now look here face, I’m going to teach you a lesson you’ll never forget…

It’s a big beautiful aircraft. It cost a huge amount of money to run. So what, so bloody what. Why on earth isn’t every single person on this forum backing it to the hilt? I too get tired of the ‘we’re doomed if you don’t stump up more money’ approach but I maintain my monthly direct debit because I’d rather have it flying than not.

I wonder. Would the same level of anger be levelled towards the operation from aviation enthusiasts if they were constantly begging for funds to keep a Lancaster, Halifax or Stirling appearing at airshows?

I was at Waddington on Saturday, got in late because of the scandalous traffic problems so consequently couldn’t get near to front of crowd line. However, once the Vulcan had finished displaying, a substantial number of people packed up and went home and I could actually get to the front! That to me says a number of people were there to see the Vulcan. You only had to listen to what they were saying as they walked past to realise they were not aviation enthusiasts. They were there to see the Vulcan, it’s big, noisy, been on the telly, maybe saw it as a kid at an airshow they were dragged to by parents.

Did you use a Canon 100-400mm lens, those pics look almost identical to some of mine!!

Great pictures Seamus, what kit you using? I had a canon 30D + 100-400 and struggled with the light conditions, as well as people getting in the way lol!

I agree 100% with your post Paul. I have said it on here before… The Vulcan display is boring and sedate. The only part worth watching is the take off (sometimes!)…

My family have a business that has being going to the airshows for the last 20 years. I always remember when 558 flew with the RAF you could leave the stall, stand outside and watch the display and you know that 99% (I think literally 99%!) of the airfield was also watching her. No need to worry about having anything stolen, or any loss in business. It’s not the same any more. I can honestly say I don’t see any drop in business now while 558 displays.

My memory of the vulcan display was the howl, and the feeling inside your stomach when power was applied… You just don’t get that any more.

I’m with Paul… I’d rather see one season ‘proper’ vulcan flying than 3 years of what we’re seeing at the moment.

Just a quick edit in reply to Chox’s post… I REALLY hope they dont retire the aircraft to Finningley… She needs to end her days somewhere that has a good throughput of people… I think Bruntingthorpe or even Elvington would be ideal. This is only my opinion but I cant see Finningley being a long terms home when they only have 6 or 7 flights a day going out of there. If you’ve ever tried to fly out of ‘Robbin Hood, Doncaster Sheffield’ airport then you’ll know just how un user-friendly it is… I dont even think there will be an airport there in 10 years, but thats only my personal opinion.

I agree that the Vulcan display isn’t as thrilling as it used to be back in the days when I saw it at Church Fenton, Finningley etc etc. But things have improved since the first display post restoration at Waddington. Last time I saw her was at RIAT last year, and it was a much more spirited display

Can anyone remember what event it was a few years ago in which he flew in the rear seat of a Spitfire on TV? I feel it may have taken place at Southampton, for some sort of anniversary.

Or maybe i’m thinking of someone else. Maybe spitfire test pilot Alex Henshaw.

    Can anyone remember?

    Hi Danjama

I think that was Alex Henshaw. I seem to recall he didn’t look to be really enjoying it too much, unfortunately. Perhaps it just wasn’t the same anymore…and he preferred to live with hsi memories of the Spitfire rather than try re-live them?

Nice Lancaster item in nice nick!

Now that’s nice, would look good made into a display item, maybe mounted on a base or something, or set in a big tank of resin, one heck of a paperweight!

Bravoalpha, your understanding of aircraft restoration is second to none. I salute you sir for having such a grasp on the work undertaken, presumably you too will be buying aircraft and restoring them in this manner seeing as it’s so simple, and profitable. I look forward to seeing your projects!

oh the agony with all this free publicity, how will he ever sell anything again ….he might be able to hike the prices up even furthur !!!!

Free publicity caused by losing out on thousand upon thousands of pounds needed to pay his mortgage, wages, outlay, 1000+ hours labour etc etc. The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh…

If any of you are up and around at 9am tomorrow Chris should (all being well) be on the BBC1 Breakfast programme.

Ha, even that’s not possible, you’re not allowed to sell ex-military aircraft on ebay anymore! There’s always stuff to get miffed about in relation to XH558, I get so sick of seeing the pleas for more money etc sometimes…but ultimately I’m thankful they do what they do, and I still pay my monthly dircet debit because I want a Vulcan to stay flying.
