Talk about cutting off their nose to spite their face. If they don’t allow him to put it back up and let it sell, they miss out on the fees they would’ve earned..which would have been a LOT!
Chris was on Calendar News tonight with said Harrier!! Interesting angle…
I’ll be watching this thread with interest! Have always been fascinated with the S-67, great looking machine
Bet the data plate was for the Jag, so removed as they were originally off the Tornado when they put HOTAS on the Jag, that way he can plug it as both and it semi hides it’s ebay history……. it has 2 offers on it so hope they haven’t been suckered over it as it is now worldwide and the USA hence the dollar price………. really does give ebay a bad name, I agree with you. Should have a time constraint in place to stop this practice happening if you intend to relist something you bought at a higher price like that.
The item was badly listed on its first showing on ebay. Sure, I’d be as surprised as the next man to see it go for $1900 but equally it’s worth more than it orignally went for. That’s Ebay for you.
How are potential buyers being suckered? The ad clearly states it’s off a Jag. Why should he include the fact he bought it off another ebay seller? Ebay isn’t some cosy little club for swapping aircraft parts between buddies, people go on there to sell stuff and make as much money as possible, or buy stuff dirt cheap..and maybe sell it on to make as much money as possible!!
There was some kind of Yorkshire based aviation archaeology group active up until the 70s/80 I believe, there may be details of them in White Rose Base by Brian Rapier.
..a hugely charismatic aircraft…very,VERY noisey..throttles in the roof..big swing on take off..possibly the very last of the “real” mens planes…
“..A flight engineer called George S***ge was on the flight deck of an Air Charter York (..G_AMUS..??) along with Captain Don MacKenzie – he later became chief pilot of British United Airways.. George seemed quite miserable when halfway down the runway Don turned to George and said “cheer up George.” George thought he said – gear up George. The rest is history as one very sad York sank back on the runway with very bent propellers.” (with thanks to Roy Saxton)
..something dad told me possibly with a pinch of salt, but knowing dad probably not…he was first officer with Don on Yorks..
I really hope this tale is true, it’s had me chuckling at my desk!
Most impressive Alex, I look forward to reading your updates! Keep up the (very) good work 🙂

Haha! I wondered when the price discussion would start. You wouldn’t pay that price for it, but hopefully someone will because he doesn’t restore aircraft for charity, it’s his business! And when you deduct a year’s worth of hard graft, cost of giant Airfix kit, transportation to place of restoration, sourcing missing parts from all round the country, wages, research, staff, VAT etc etc the price looks pretty reasonable.
Good God, it’s stunning!! I’ve only seen low res phone pics up until today. I knew he’d put a serious amount of work into this one but I’m gobsmacked. As much as I like the SHAR, the 2 tone camouflage on the GR3/T2 looks a lot sexier
Hi Redhill yes it was in one of the hangars with engine cowling open, I did take couple of pics
God…I wish!!! No, I just meant a.n.other airworthy aircraft that had Bristol Hercules engines – can’t actually think of one off the top of my head.
I remember reading in Bomber Command News (is that still going?!) at the time that they’d been gifted 4 airworthy Hercules engines by the French airforce…did YAM use these engines or were they swapped for ‘static’ ones so they could be used in an airworthy machine?
Ah well I did take a couple of the Victor, I’ll upload them tonight! Speaking of Elvington, any chance the full scale airshows could ever return? Such a shame they stopped, it was my favourite airshow – loved going up on the Friday after work and camping for the full weekend. Although it was a big show it still had a more ‘personal’ feel to it than others I go to.
