Just to update

Thanks for the concern everyone. Just to clarify, although there was evidence of what appears to be preparation for theft, no significant items have been taken. We have suffered minor theft in the past. The Vulcan remains open to the public and is the only one in the UK where you can arrive at the museum and guarantee you will get a tour. We close at the end of this month for our winter recess and open again on 25th March 2016. Check the webpage for further details.

To expand a little. The incident that primarily concerned us was the unscrewing/loosening of mounting screws to the periscope on the engineer’s station which was clearly the action of an adult with intent rather than a thoughtless opportunist. Although we would be at pains to not attribute blame too quickly, the incident was reported shortly after a photographer was granted exclusive entry for a photo-shoot. It could be coincidence, maybe we had not noticed before. We have since briefed all our staff that no-one, including the Pope, is allowed into the cockpit without direct supervision.

From a post on Facebook…Apparently some scumbag stole some items from XJ823 recently.. relief tubes and unscrewed and removed part of the aeo’s panel.. please keep an eye out for anything online and let the museum know if anything shows up for sale?

    Peter,

Thanks for this, it’s very helpful and exactly what I needed. It seems your account tallies to Mary’s Sister and today I visited the site and got a grasp of where it is. Would you be okay for me to quote your recollections in a new book I’m writing? I’m following 2 crews of the 388th and this aircraft was one that they flew. The picture attached shows the mess made, on your account it may be that the wing and forward section is in fact detached and further down from the bank than the tail in the background? Certainly the tail is at a different angle.

    Thanks again, David Price

Thanks for this, but I need some local specific info if possible. Perhaps there’s not much more to tell but what I’m really on the hunt for is a specific location on the former airfield – possibly houses built on now! I’m in the area in a few weeks time.

I used to own the forward section of ‘655 post Strathallen scrapping, itself badly done. Kept her in Cumbria for some years before selling to Gatwick.

    any more??

Question is, are there any more at Woodford golf course?

The woodford golf course shelters came from the Nimrod aircraft that were going for AEW mk3 conversion at the site they are MR1/ MR2 radomes.

I dug one of these up back in 1995 and took it back to Warton to fit to XV147, surprisingly all the fasteners still worked (we did have permission from the golf club to dig it up).

As for differences to the flightdeck, the flight engineers panel should have some extra gauges to monitor the fuel tank temperature. To overcome the issue of heat in the fuselage from the avionics heat was removed from the cabin using a liquid coolant, this was passed through a heat-exchanger to dump the heat in to the fuel. The hot fuel was then pumped through the wing skin stringers which acted like a giant radiator to dissipate the heat – Mike

Interesting photos; I did hear of a spare radome in Leics c/o David Walton some years ago. To do a refit would require lifting the whole thing on scaffolding/frame. More importantly of course, there’s the mounting section missing. However, it’s not impossible by any means.

To go back to MR1 would probably mean creating a new fibre-glass forward nose section, but probably only a ‘half’ nose due to height. The eye brows would stay but the probe would need to go. Not such a big job actually.

Inside the flight deck is still AEW 3, and as it’s so intact, best to stay that way.

    MK1 History

I know with XV259 everyone associates it with AEW3 project, but of course, it’s initial career as a MR1 was still stirling stuff. Found a nice photo – long link!:

I see she also was on show at the 1977 Silver Jubilee event at Finningly. Pity the AEW 3 fiasco has been followed by yet another Nimrod no-show with the MR4.

I even wondered about removing the remnants of AEW3 fairings and restoring to MR1 standard and colours – maybe for someone else though!

    could do with details too

I could do with some links too for a new meteor NF14 canopy for Solway Av. Museum.

    Thanks,

    David Price

We use Brian Stow; he used to work for one of the major players in the industry and now works on his own. He did us some Spitfire canopies using an existing mould, and he can make moulds for you. A really nice chap, I’ll dig out his details if you’re interested.
