Obama has been hit hard for sitting on his thumbs for this one by some; others have said he is getting his just rewards for his meddling in Eygpt, Libya and bloviating about Syria.

    This is just political pandering.

If actual shooting starts, the death toll for the U.S. will make Afghanistan and Iraq look like minor incidents.

You have to think about it…B-52 carries 100 000 kg of ordnance.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_B-52_Stratofortress

It has never been easier to do collateral damage as it is today…unfortunately.

“Collateral damage” is a political gimmick that gets soldiers killed needlessly because politicians sit on their fat asses no where near the front-lines.

When the heavies are called in, as in the “Nam Christmas raids, there is lip service for collateral damage but the reality of war by then has finally reached the voters who will send politicians packing and it becomes kill them till there are no more to kill and get this damn war over.

Mustang carried as much bomb load as the Gotha bomber by the luftwaffe in WW I. B-29 carried 9000 kg..and B-17 only 3600 kg…new fighters can do that…what is the payload for modern bomber…something to think about ?

The B-1 can carry approx. 30,000 kg. the Tu-160 approx. 45,000 kg both with ranges of thousands of miles with internal fuel.

    What is your point?

Don’t be so dismissive. It all depends on parameters, definition of modern and size. True as djcross pointed out some modern airliners (doing a quick scan for Boeing 777 and A340 confirms) cost $300 million it doesn’t mean a bomber can’t be done for less.

$100 million might be a big ask but below $150, possibly. If it’s just to haul a huge amount of bombs or guided missiles then you don’t need to complex a plane. Crew of two, maybe three maximum, forgoing full stealth you could use an existing plane as your base. I’d have thought a bomber would maybe less complex than an airliner in many ways. It’s an interesting though any how.

Modern or vintage, for a plane to haul 25-50 tons of bombs or ordnance and not get blown out of the sky, even by basic ground fire, is not going to be simple.

Your logic sounds like the mode used by the dweebs in Washington that gives soldiers half-assed weapons.

I’m the historian on a US-based forum about vintage Harley-Davidsons, and over the years I’ve learned not to judge the US members by European standards.

For example, on a thread discussing the causes and effects of Global Warming, we Europeans mainly spoke of buying smaller, more efficient cars, insulating our homes, recycling our waste, etc, but the general US reaction was to stockpile tinned food and literally tons of ammunition…

That sounds like bogus rhetoric as the U.S. , is divided between those who follow the liberal Chcken-Little preachers and those who realize it is political bs.

Firearms are never part of the debate — except possibly when inserted by those trying to make a bogus point.

    Define modern.

Wouldn’t that just be Armscor protecting their own business from the more amateur rivals who might be driven out by the requirement to obtain a licence?

Yes but Armscor does business in millions and the backyard boys in thousands.

Khrushchev gave Crimea to the Ukraine now they want it back.

In the U.S. one thing, that even the press has mentioned, for just a moment, before burying it, is that the 24 hours day, weeks long, coverage such murderers gets is probably a major reason that it happens.

Suicide having been elevated from being a thing done by fools and cowardly scum tobeing a real cool way to die has probably contributed to sleaze deciding to be remembered by being a murderous coward.

    Addendum:
I found out recently that the Philippines have a group of firearm enthusiasts just as gungho as those in the U.S., whilst submachine guns there cost a tenth of what they do in the U.S.

I read a Philippine forum where a fellow Filipino asked the owner of a subgun how hard it was to get papers to get one and he replied by saying when it is quiet, it is just a normal pain in the buttocks but when the rebels cause trouble it is very easy to get.
On a secondary note: the Philippines have area similar to the gun makers in Pakistan’s Khyber Pass area, last year the Philippine government passed a law that would require the gun manufacturers to get a Fed. license.
Oddly this measure was supported by one of the Philippines largest makers of firearms, Armscor which started as a backyard garage operation.

Here are a couple of the products of the garage gunsmiths; they are Thompson submachine guns with a shortened receivers called a tomgram locally.
They were for sale in the Philippines version of internet want adds.

Unless Poland wants to engage in U.S., British, French save the world style fighting, they would be better building or buying an top rank interceptor to keep their airspace free of intruders.

My bet would be a blending of the Mig-31 and YF-12 concepts.

Mach 4 maybe not but I do not doubt it could cruise at Mach 3, if it happens.
