I think most Lightning models fitted with guns had just the twin 30-mm cannons (nose in early models, ventral tank front section in the F.6)…right?

The early ones had two nose guns, F3 had none, the F2A hand both nose and ventral guns and the F6 had two ventral guns.
All had various ventral packages, one being 44 two inch rockets.

I think it wouldn’t have made difference either. As said above, it would have been a stripped down version with K-13s and R-60s
It would have been a mistake for Vietnam to get those birds at that time.

Of coarse SA-3 would have made all the difference! It would have been a total game changer. But that’s a different topic for sure.

Had it actually made a serious dent affecting the air war, the USAF had camouflage pattern developed for the F-106 interceptor, and probably would have sent it.

It was never sent as the fighters there were never seriously challenged.

Unlike the fighters there, the Six performance did not change with the drop tanks, as all its performance figures were for a fully loaded aircraft.
It was the only U.S. aircraft the Mig-21 could not turn inside of, plus radar system far superior to anything used in “Nam.
It also had very, very long legs, even without tanks, and could have kept on fighting well past the point where the other planes there were already searching for a tanker.
