16D49 Kolomna diesel engines that started replacing the German units on 20385.
First set on 28 April 2016
Second set on 19 May 2016
Its good to finally see a new tanker being launched. Project 23130 Academic Pashin has been launched at Nevsky Shipyard, this is the first unit of the new (of any class) tankers since the dissolution.

The ship was rolled out of the covered dock on 18th March 2016.

Some interesting figures were apparently floated by the MOD + Sevmash, regarding the state of completion+contract progress of nuclear boats @ Sevmash:
955A:
-Knyaz Vladimir (first 955A submarine): 44.6%
-Knyaz Oleg (first serial 955A): 19.1%
-Generalissimus Suvorov: 13.9%
-Imperator Alexander III: 2.7%885M:
-Kazan (first 885M): 67.5%
-Novosibirsk (first serial 885M): 35.5%
-Krasnoyarsk: 19.3%
-Arkhangelsk: 4.7%
-Order number 165 (not laid down yet): 0.6%
-Order number 166 (not laid down yet): 0.3%
In short at Sevmash 10 x n-subs construction is going on in parallel…. in addition to that we have a carrier size cruiser, Pr.1144, undergoing upgradation and probably other civilian constructions.
Its good to see Sevmash back to its level, but probably not yet to its past levels. Good going but funding need to be increased and kept steady so that a timeline of 5 years or lower can be kept for the subs/ships.
More insiders saying India was asking for an 885 submarine for the next rental agreement. MOD replied they could only hand over a 971, and are waiting a response from India by 2017.
There is absolutely no need for Russia to part with the 885 in any forseable future when the requirement is for a navy whose political class is fully in the other camp. If IN wants newer stuff, considering the ongoing honeymoon, they should be asking for the Virginia or LA class from the U.S. It will also help in getting a true sense of how the new richer bedmate is when it comes to fulfilling the needs of an every demanding GF. Lets see if that new posh BF will part with any capability or will they just show the lady her place. (In India we say…. apna aukatha dikka dena).
Even the Indian presstitutes nd fanboys who for every purchase scream for murican wares doesn’t utter anything in support for u.s submarines. Probably they very well know their aukath…
That aside, I feel India should be looking to lease LA class as Russia itself don’t have enough subs to lease.
Vishnu,
Any info on how many have already converted to the 29K/KUB and by what time frame the squadron will be up and running on VKD?
why 14 only? Wiki says 26.
How much round the clock support could you get out of only 14 jets, lets say a week into the fight given serviceability and other issues?
It will be more than 14 but will be based on operational requirements. I don’t want to type it all again, so quoting what I had posted 3 years back. The numbers need not be 34 as I mentioned below, but it is more likely to be 45 x MiG-29K/KUB shared between VKD and INS Vikrant, with two squadrons each on the decks of these two carriers.
The numbers quoted are 24 aircrafts and could mean 2 squadron. Commisioning photos have shown INS Vikramaditya to base two units INAS 303 – The Black Panthers and INAS 300 – The White Tigers. In my view, the current White Tigers will start converting to MiG-29K/KUB in 2-3 years time or maybe even earlier.
I think the wartime numbers are likely to increase and if the total density is what matters then it can be 13 x MiG-29K in hanger and 12-21 x MiG-29K on the deck for a total of upto 34 x MiG-29K/KUB divided between two squadrons.
It might sound highly optimistic, but not impossible. Few things remember
1) 13 is a solid figure of 29K that can be accommodated inside the hanger.
2) The bow is configured to take/service 11-12 x MiG-29K returning from mission and atleast first of the 11 aircrafts that got trapped will be anchored at bow. I see no reason for any obstacle in trapping of aircraft and it will not be any surprise if we manage a trapping interval of one aircraft every minute.
3) The rest of the aircraft 13-21 probably might have slightly higher trapping interval as these aircrafts will need to be parked at the 8 slots available aft of the island and will be obstructing the landing strip slightly more than the earlier 11-12 aircrafts. But for now its going to be more manageable figure of 16 aircrafts.

First of the new series of small/medium tankers, Project 23130 Akademik Pashin, is in its final stages. The pic is an older one.

Pr.11356 Admiral Grigorovich is on its way to its permanent basing with BSF crossing the English channel. Its successor Admiral Essen and Admiral Makrov will join the group in the next 1-4 months.

See the headline…we had seen similar stuff during the IN’s VKD transit, but the storyline then was how the frigate was ‘helping’ the Indians to navigate the channel as if the Indian crew were some kids.
Navy shadow Russian frigate through UK waters

Answer depends on broader aircraft carrier ambitions and timelines.
Personally I think India should build Vishal to same specs as Vikrant and operate the same air wing (with suitable upgrades),
That is the logical step to follow but there are just too many morons at high places and an unending line of clueless expert fanboys who promote illogical plans.
Promotion of a larger super-duper carrier at this stage (even after CSL requesting for the second one) is to scuttle the existing flow and have vested interest behind it. The only result of this stupidity will be Indian Navy having just two carriers even by 2025-30 (I bet!) coz either that super-duper carrier would still be in deign phase or in construction waiting for funds to be allocated for the next stage.
After giving over Rs.30+ crores to the Italians for ‘design consultations’ for Project 71/IAC and with just one ship ordered which have not yet entered service, the idiots are thinking of even a bigger carrier. So what next… spend hundreds of crores (Indian Rupee has dived a lot since then!) on “design consultation”. There is a serious problem with long term planning. Its a fact. And there wont be any short of fanboys to term this new larger carrier as that long term strategic planning.

Captain Swaminathan and his VKD
Vishnu,
Nice video grab (?). From this angle the MiG-29K looks bigger that what it’s size reflects in the top view on the deck.
IFR-2015 promo on VKD
Thought about digging up this thread for posting that right stuff!
Finally (!), INS Vikramaditya shown with its full deck component of 14 x MiG-29K/KUB and helos.
Lots of changes for the white ‘domes’ having their places shifted and an AD fit that is just ok, done on a tight budget. Two AK-630 at the stern deck edges and 3 set of Barak-I on the superstructure.
…
First outing for VKD went great I suppose. Also good to see Captain Swaminathan in command of the ship and I bet VKD is more like his own child as he oversaw the transformation of INS Vikramaditya during his tenure as IN’s overseeing team at Sevmash.
Btw, any high resolution pics from the event and a full scale pic having all the a/c on the deck?
The Russian MDM’s wont be using PS-90A, they will just keep D-30’s, install some comms systems from Il-76MD-90A and call it the day. I would be surprised if Indians will have PS-90 installed.
Yes it will most likely be installed as PS-90A-76 brings in 16t which is 4t higher than whats available with D-30KP2, which in effect brings to table an extra 16t of available thrust – 48t with D-30KP2 vs 64t with PS-90A-76.
Unless someone shoots it down saying its too costly, PS-90A-76 is a done deal during the IL-76 upgrade. Another interesting stuff w.r.t to Indian acquisition is that Russian systems are always too costly and takes ages to finalize, where as US systems are never too costly to buy and happens with the blink of an eye.
