I’m afraid that this is one society that I will never join.

Many years ago, probably about 25-30 years, I enquired at a society tent (recruiting members?) at an airshow how I could go about joining, only to be told by a rather snooty fellow (looking down his nose) that it was only open to Spitfire pilots and ground crew or anyone closely involved with the aircraft, fans were not welcome.

Thankfully when the Cavalier Air Force and the Sally B Club started they weren’t so picky.

My question is: what is the object that drops past the camera at aprox 1:00:40 another similar object passes nearer at aprox 1:04:45 – neither looks much like a bomb.

Looks great,I can’t wait to be standing on the tank bank in the summer and have it scream over head at low level, chased by a Spitfire or Hurricane!
Would folks mind do you think if this sequence had a ten minute slot all of its own?

With the BOB music playing over the tannoy?!

Might be a good idea for a proms slot……….:D

Just remember to gag the frog – er, sorry that’s not very pc (but neither am I), the Frenchman.

Thanks for that, I now know that I can at least take my flash along without being hassled, all I’ve got to do now is get there again – I bet the place has changed a little in the past 27 years.

The reason I was given was something along the lines that constant exposure to flash would encourage deteriation of the aircraft fabric coverings (although the ban included everything) – or was someone talking through their backside?

It looks black. I found only by using flash with a long exposure that it is actually dark green.

    You used flash ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

I’ve visited Hendon 4 times since 1974 (last in 1983) and am long overdue for a visit, however, on each occasion I was told in no uncertain terms (when my SLR was spotted) that “flash is not allowed” – didn’t stop those carrying compact cameras with built in flash though.

    No matter! ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s a shot from Airliners.net showing G-FIRE as she was then, with the strobes evident:

Can’t remember which one, but I do recall seeing G-FIRE at an air show once using the strobes.

[QUOTE=CADman;1544222]the gate keepers simply do not understand what is meant by ‘can I photograph the airplanes, please’ I have been told that a phone call to base public affairs can gain permission, but never tried it.
    [QUOTE]

Are the gate keepers American or British? Perhaps you should have asked about the aeroplanes.

There was a bloke strolling about Duxford’s end-of-season show with some Nazi dress uniform or other on. My friends – including one Jewish bloke – took me there as a surprise for my birthday. No-one took offence – he looked too ridiculous – but some DID look at me funny after that (“..is THIS what you’re into”?)

But was it a Nazi uniform or just a German military uniform – after all not all German combatants were Nazis, which seems to get missed a lot in the press these days, or is the term a way of splitting the current Germany with the “Nazi” Germany of the past.

    Hi Rob68

From my records of the show โ€“ 21 August 1983:

You are correct in the P-51 identity โ€“ G-PSID with the name โ€œWidowmakerโ€

The Lizzie is (or was then) V9281 G-BCWL

I also remember one year wandering around the hangars and coming across (in the grass behind one of them) a wooden “mock-up” of a power boat that Noel Edmunds was going to “use” for something (a record perhaps?), don’t remember it ever coming to fruition. It was a strange contraption with a “cockpit” (from memory, something like the Blofeld’s batho-sub in Diamonds Are Forever) which was stepped above the water on a stem/neck with the power in a seperate pod beneath the water level. Have got a couple of photos buried somewhere.

Regards Pearl Harbo(u)r, I bought the 3-disc special edition and the extras far outweigh the film propper – showing the original (before cgi) flying around the ships in Pearl, real seat of the pants flying which would give elf & safety zealots a fit.

Dammit, the Rudhall books are in boxes at the moment. I’m sure there’s an ID in that one.

Looked in the obvious places in “Battle of Britain” The Movie, there is mention of a two minute silence for the pilot that died in the crash, but the machine’s identity is not given (Reel 4 – Lights, Camera, Action!).

Unfortunatley there is no mention if its identity in Reel 14 (The Aircraft Fleet, Then and Now).

    Planemike

And I’m sure there are some sellers that could arrange that. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
