Yes, I was wrong in my thinking. The R-27 was the missile developed for the Fulcrum (and Flanker)

I know what you mean: the images I posted were taken from a book I got when I was a young teenager; I read over and over again. When I rediscovered it a little time ago it really made me interested in researching images from the time of the early 80’s when little was known about Soviet planes.

I think the artist had to do with very little real information and based everything else in what was “typically” Soviet: hence the similarity to other MiG products.
The last illustration of a Flanker, clearly shows the general view of the prototype.
