From the Horses Mouth…
Have just seen this thread and must comment.
Unfortunately, due to an acrimonious divorce, I was left with no choice whatsoever but to wind up Victory Books in November 2007, which was a great blow as, having left the police in 2005 to write and publish full time, the enterprise was doing well and held great promise.
I am now writing for Amberley PLC, owned by legendary historical publisher Alan Sutton. I will not, however, be engaging in any further book signings or, the moment having very much passed, and I am much enjoying a quieter life able to also pursue two other strong interests.
For the record, having rebuilt my life these past couple of years I am now very happily pursuing a career as an academic historian and writer with a low to no public profile – the way I now like and intend to keep it.
Distressing….
Well, I have to say that this thread is most distressing.
I have absolutely no idea whatsoever how one of my precious Battle of Britain photographs has appeared for salee in, of all places, a car boot sale. There are, so far as I am aware, but two possible explanations: –
Firstly it is interesting to see that the name of Chris Gale, my estranged cousin, has been mentioned hereon as having disposed of certain of my collection – without my knowledge, permission, or with any right, therefore, to do so. I can only assume from reading the post in question that when I had no choice but to let Chris go, as it were, from Victory Books, there was a quantity of material from various publishing projects left with him and which was subsequently disposed of illegally. I would, in fact, be very interested to hear from the poster mentioning Chris’s name as to what material he received from that source.
Secondly, my ex-wife and former business partner orchestrated a forced entry into my office several years ago and removed a still indeterminable quantity of property. It is also possible, therefore, that the photograph was taken at that time.
As for me having ‘given up on aviation twice in the past’, that needs qualifying. The first occcasion was in 2002, following the sudden death of my beloved father and subsequent harrowing experience, understandably dictating a shift in priorities. Secondly in 2006, when Victory Books unfortunately had to be wound up due to said acrimonious divorce and when life basically disintegrated completely. Fortunately, however, life is now very happily back on track and progress being made once more on all fronts!
Alan Wright
I am absolutely delighted to hear that my information, which was on good authority, regarding Group Captain Wright’s status was incorrect. Having beeen in contact with so many of The Few over the years it is, understandably, difficult to keep up with everyone personally – anyway, hands up, I made a mistake, for which I will apologise to Alan personally, of course. Fortunately ‘The Few’ will very soon be produced as a softback second edition, in which I will ensure that the error is corrected, as it will be in the smaller paperback third edition in due course. So, ‘unfortunate’ yes, but ‘unforgiveable’…. I think not.
