it does look to me like they have decided to counter the Rafale PR assault.
I wonder what will happen next?
I suppose an export for Rafale might calm things down…
Where is the next Typhoon order to come from? In that which competition is due to end next?
i can see the whole arguement about secret systems, and i don’t doubt that Russia has plenty of projects that it won’t disclose or market.
I just wonder if a country like the UK is in the position to develop and deploy a system like the RQ170 Sentinel (recently revealed in Afghan by the US), or if all we do is make secret test aircraft that prove we can do it (like Replica) or feed systems into acknowledged programmes.
I would love to think that Taranis would lead to a secretive unit that operated (uk only aircraft) wherever the UK was engaged in a conflict.
I suppose the operation and deployment of Mantis might give some clues…
I would have thought that the relevant questions are:
“why do Eurofighter feel that they need to come out and say this so openly and in such an inflamatory way?”
” does the fact that this comes from the manufacturer imbue it with more weight (as Cola says) than the french claims about al dahfra?”
I don’t doubt that the F15 can be bested, and there is a flaw in the USAF theory, but a few years ago we were all saying that poor F15 performances were happening to justify a large F22 order.
Now that is patently untrue…
Hi John,
but to what end i wonder. Is the UK (or any other country outside the US) in the habit of employing totally secret aircraft on the front line, in the post cold war world?
Would something like nightjar and replica have simply allowed them to produce an acknowledged aircraft that raised a few eyebrows or would they have looked to use it in time of need…
I mean if replica allows us to understand LO technology independent of another power then to what end?
in a way what i’m thinkin is that something like Neuron looks like a potent system, but is being offered to all an sundry and well in the public domain.
This is apparently a big deal for Dassault, whereas so far BAE has kept its cards (corax, herti and Mantis for example) very close to its chest and within the UK.
I would like to think that a potent technologically advanced aircraft (perhaps like Taranis which as mentioned comes from a “secret” development) would not be offered for all to see.
After all these things are weapon systems and if they are largely public programmes then part of the effect is diminished isn’t it?
I always remember the arguement that it suited the US to have all the Alien technology rubbish floating around Area 51 and its prodgeny purely because it kept it all on a different level to systems like the F22 and JSF.
i also think that the total lack of security on the ground has something to do with it.
There are some very wierd stories coming out of the country (road blocks made from bodies was one local protest at the lack of action reported by the bbc on friday).
NGOs are saying they can’t set up in tents for fear of violence and the society was in trouble before this hellish situation occurred.
its a massive and incredibly quick response which even then may not be enough
shall we call it a day for now? its just a slanging match.
roll on the new information but until tehn i for one can sleep a little easier 😉
fantastic stuff. thanks for that.
so accurate and the neighbours probably didn’t look up from the morning papers when it went in 😉
here we go again round and round in circles. we have moved from whether the french claims are justified (that seems to be highly questionable now) to whether or not the Rafale can better the F22….
The F22s were there in a very half hearted capacity. I don’t think it would count if it happened other than to add a welcome boost to a marketing campaign…
when was the last time SAAB as a company attempted to offer 3 differing fighter designs (with overlapping capabilities) to the export market?
it doesn’t make any sense.
kev 99 (battle of the planets?)
Are there any sources for results? I would have thought it was the perfect weapon for clearing compounds and the like…
after all the hellfire is the weapon of choice for Predators and Reapers isn’t it?
so some light is shed.
I shall continue on my way with a spring in my step.
If, and I emphasize if, this is adding context to the exercise results claimed by the French, then it begs the question “Why are they so desperate to put a positive spin on the exercise?”.
Particularly if those in the know knew otherwise…
edge i’m kind of whith you. i can;t see why or how SAAB will suddenly promote Gripen, Gripen NG and a more advanced gripen sized aircraft (surely that negates the NG? and demotes Gripen to third world status?
doesn’t make sense.
in my opninion we need to start summarising what we are saying.
i have been away for 24 hours and come back to 3 new pages of agressive paranoia.
Doesn’t it get boring saying that someone who is critical of your position is incapable of objective thought?
Perhaps its my fault for questioning the French account of what happened. Maybe i said they got an F22 in their sights….
Its thoroughly depressing to see that some contirbutors just don’t want others to have their say.
For example, just because a journalist knows alot about typhoon, and perhaps is not so well connected in the Rafale world, does that make what they say worthless? If people like, Jon Lake (i use that name because others have been banging on about it) write an article in favour of Typhoon, why does that matter in the great scheme of things?
If anything this debate highlights that any sane person would say that both Rafale and Typhoon should be much further advanced down the CAS role, let alone all of the other things like Stormshadow/SCALP and anti-shipping.
They are both much more capable that the F22 will ever be in the A2G arena.
The more people bang on and look for conspiracy in what i take to be informed and honest replies, the less they make any sense.
this isn’t a french british ting, it seems that some people are incapable of understanding the potential of Typhoon, and if the UAE result is true, then the french have a real winner dont they?
thanks F35b,
i was out of the country when the conflict took place, but i would have thought thats probably all the information there is to get on the subject (give or take).
its a special feeling when you read that the US is impressed 😉
