For the record, one of our F-111C’s once penetrated the defensive shield of US Navy carrier task force and flew over the carrier island during an exercise. AFAIK we are the only air force the world to accomplish that. We have have one of the highest standards of crew training in the world.

    What a Great Topic!

I asked the same thing of fighters in the AFM forum.
I think it depends on the class of airliner, it’s very difficult to pick one, it depends on the role. I can’t believe how much support there is here for the Tristar! I can’t stand the way the third engine is incorporated into the tail. Harmonious…NOT! One of my worst.

I know it sounds like racism, but I can’t appreciate any of the Russian stuff except the Tu-144. They all have too many frames around the cockpit glazing and they look a little unrefined in their execution from an aesthetic point of view.

Although the Airbus product is undoubtedly commercially sound, and it’s great to see a company offering a balance to Boeing’s product, I think the Airbus fleet looks a little too generic. It lacks soul.

There are a great many ugly looking things, mostly from the 50’s, like the Argosy, the Bristol Freighter, but I can’t remember them because I tend to focus on the beautiful ones, which I shall now do: I’ve always liked the 50 series DC-8’s and the -62 far better than the B707. Far more elegant and graceful. I think for the time being the B757 represents the quintessential narrow body until the Sonic Cruiser comes along (will that be classed as a narrow body?) I would have said the absolute definitive shape for a subsonic wide-body airliner was the B767-200 until the B777-200 came along. I like the turboprop Do328 a great deal as well. It’s very slick. The Grumman Gulfstream GV is very elegant as well. I can easily understand why someone would like the B747, and I actually like the SP as well because of its tall tail. There will always be a special place in my heart for the B2707-300, but the most elegant, striking, harmonious, beautiful aircraft of all time would have to be the Concorde. Without a doubt.

    Hey Suhail!

Don’t listen to the dickhead Serendib. It’s good to hear some candid views from our Muslim brothers. The greatest thing about these forums is that everyone gets a say and cannot be silenced.

I have a theory which I would like to check with all Muslim participants on this forum: I know little about Islam, but the impression I get is that privacy is a highly valued part of your religion & culture. If so, this would go some way to explaining the lack of popular knowledge about the ways of Islam as far as the Western World is concerned. Ignorance has allowed racism to flourish particularly during this highly strung time as the US battles against terrorism. We are seeing and hearing reports of people who bear a passing resemblance to an Arab being assaulted, threatened, and Mosques being attacked. The Religion of Islam has been highly publicised as a result of the terrorist attacks, George’s initial speech, and clerics stating publicly some the tenets of Islam and renouncing violence.

I fully respect the need for privacy, but I believe that perhaps the time has come for Islam to take advantage of mass communication the way Christianity and Judaism have. The Islamic community knows well of its own religion, but the rest of the world does not, and anti-Islamic propaganda is partly to blame. Perhaps now Moslems could take the initiative and teach the rest of the world what we need to know, so that the senseless descrimination can stop, and so that terrorists cannot take advantage of your religion any more.

    What say thou?

    Grow up, Sauron.

Is the American psyche so fragile that it can’t handle a little criticism? The problem with the American perception of the world is that ANYTHING that is said against America is viewed as ficticious. Americans cannot handle criticism of any kind, no matter how well backed up it is by evidence. Have you offered in this debate one shred of evidence to counter Suhail’s claims? I have read more than one account of the way foreigners are treated by US immigration officials. The US and its people are not better than the rest of the world, and they are not incapable of injustice, abuse, and oppression. American people are just as fallible as any other race on this planet. The sympathy of the world towards America in its time of crisis will run thin if the American people continue to display attitudes of arrogance and ignorance of the their government’s policies and world affairs.

    RE: AMERICAN AIRLINES CRASH!!!

    I agree with Sauron.
I’ve never heard of an engine coming off an Airbus before. And it sounds like the plane’s major components separated in mid air. That’s very unusual. Usually the a/c remains intact in the air until it hits the ground. I concede there may have been a structural problem with the engine pylon- if this turns out to be a genuine accident, AA is just about ‘gone’ as a major carrier- too much bad luck. How much is it going to take to get the US industry to shrug off its complacency?

    ICM Mig 31

The ICM kit is a re-boxed Condor kit. Until Hasegawa or Tamiya do one (wish, wish) the Zvezda kit is the best, definitely better than Kangam.

Albatros & Aztec offer decals for Peruvian markings for the Su-22, and Pantera did a kit with Libyan markings. Aeromaster have also released a decal sheet with Libyan & Afghan mkgs.

    Very Cool

Build it in 1/72, then you can put a helicopter on it, without having to scratchbuild!

    Eastern kits

Yep, the best MiG 15 in 1/72 I believe is the Kopro kit, NOT the Dragon kit. Best MiG 31 kit in 1/72 is the Zvezda kit by a long shot. However, the Condor kit has better rear fuselage contours just under the vertical fin. If you can afford it, a combination of parts from both kits would be best. I have quite a few L-39 Kopro kits, a MiG 15 UTI, -15, and a -17, and I think Kopro is roughly equivalent to Airfix. I’ve seen a couple of Bilek kits (MiG 21, L-29)and theyre OK, again roughly equivalent to Airfix. I think Zvezda would be the best Russian producer, CMK and Eduard are also very good in Eastern Europe.

    FrankVW re A-7

There’s a couple of great books on the A-7 which show it in great detail, perfect for modellers: ‘A-7 Lock On’ by Verlinden Productions, and ‘A-7 in Detail and Scale’, by Bert Kinzey. Try Motorbooks or Hannants or Midland Counties Publications, or even Amazon.com.
There is an absolutely top bookstore at http://www.hylandsbookshop.citysearch.com.au I buy there on a regular basis, they have everything you could ever want.

    Best Kit

I’d have to say that Tamiya’s 1/32 aircraft kits are probably the best I’ve seen. The F-14 has been out for years and years and it’s still on the cutting edge… both the F-15 and F-4 are just gorgeous. In fact, I’d say Tamiya makes the best kits of any subject, period.

    Wish they’d make a 1/32 Flanker or F-111…..:)

    CF101

Well, Coanda, you’ll be pleased to know that the Canadian firm ‘Leading Edge’ has just released decals for the CF101 in 1/72 and 1/48. They make THE BEST decals in the world. Theyre at http://aircraftresourcecenter.com

Youre right about CMK too, probably the best resin in the world…
