Well there will be one moving North soon – but not that far North…. 😉

Now, where did I put those ‘Detour’ signs….

I would have thought if you were preserving an airliner having engines would be a nice feature and somewhat important in preserving something of use to future generations.
You provide em, we’ll run em !
I really think you have to be very realistic with projects such as this. With the huge costs, lack of space, lack of funds, lack of parts and – lack of time given that few of us can devote full-time to these projects – you do the very best you can, which is 100% better than nothing.
It would be nice, in the fullness of time if charlie foxtrot got runnable engines and all her other systems powered up. We’ll do as much as we can and hopefully, those that follow us will continue the process.
Thanks to all who have wished us luck, we’ll need it all!
Roy.
Quick ? does she still have engines and props??
I think one engine is complete, the others are just casings. Full complement of props though. As far as I’m aware, the only runnable proteus engines are those on XM496 at Kemble. (?)
Roy.
wv838 – willing volunteer here if you guys needs help at any point with this project. 🙂
I wondered what it would take to get you here Jon!
Now we know :p
Always welcome… have sent you a PM with details.
Roy.
Yup, it’s true.
The actual press release is here though: http://www.britannia.flyer.co.uk/index.htm
Activities at the old Speke Aerodrome are on the rise. I think more and more people are beginning to realise what a gem this place is. Although the runways are sadly no more, the original terminal building and main hangars are still in place (but put to other uses) and the apron has a conservation order on it. This keeps the developers away and leaves a huge area for aircraft.
As I’m sure 99% of forum users will be painfully aware, finding somewhere large enough to keep an aircraft can be a real pain in the derriere.
Hopefully, charlie foxtrot will start moving late this month and with sea hawk XE339 arriving mid/late summer we’ll be up to four aircraft with others already being talked about.
Roy.
Except 339….. wasn’t there a thread last year where someone suggested that people in the “cockpit movement” were cutting cockpits off perfectly good airframes for their own benefit, i.e not to preserve something that was being scrapped, but because they wanted a cockpit.
Logically the person who wanted the cockpit, and the person who wanted a complete A/C, should both be able to have what they want without separating an entire airframe, when one has already been cut.
339 is hardly a “perfectly good airframe”! but yes, in an ideal world, I’d have parted with 838’s cockpit and taken 339 as a single lump, but having spent countless hours on her I’m loathe to part with her – especially as she is now probably one of the most complete sea hawk cockpits in the UK. The best solution was as described. This actually saved a lot on transport costs which we, as individuals, struggle to cope with.
With high costs, limited finances and the usual storage difficulties, we made the difficult decisions we did to do the best we could to save these aircraft.
I do apologise to the W&R team though! 😉
Roy.
Yes, I believe XE339’s emblem is intact.
Why split 339? The cockpit was wanted by someone, the fuse was wanted by me. If I hadn’t already restored 838’s cockpit I’d have been able to keep 339 intact.
This is a best-fit solution – everyone walked away happy.
Roy.
J-ETH is still around at Gatwick.
She’s undergoing a full strip down to bare metal ready for a re-paint in FAA colours this year.
Crikey – that’s a helluva job! I wonder if they get the same funny looks walking out of B&Q with gallons of paint stripper like I did when I stripped mine!
Roy.
Ah! I think it was courtesy that had her for sale. So maybe Amjet are the new owners (?)
Roy.
So was Amjet the seller then or the owner now?
Can’t recall the name of the company who had her for sale, don’t think it was Amjet though. No idea who owns her now or even where she is.
Is G-JETH still around?
Roy.
I can operate a shovel no problem!:D I just need to know where to dig!
🙂
Ah, well I’m quite sure there’s a gold-plated spitfire in my garden – coincidentally, right where my wife wants a fish pond. I’ll expect you bright and early next saturday morning then?
Roy.
Tabloid Headline??
“Hurricane destroys Spitfire!”
LOL! Go on… Naughty Corner ——————————>
… We all know that given half a chance, our illustrious Britishness-identity-bashing luvvies in the cabinet (and their army of faceless wonders) would grab any opportunity to get the red pen out.
… 537 will be flown to help promote the RAF’s heritage and that of the British aircraft industry – the days when we could build a jet or two.
Finally, why is it that this country is so damn good at self-bashing anything constructive??? This jet could have (easily) been sent to US for spares and then we’d have no end of harping on here about nobody in the UK being bothered about saving our jet heritage.
Yet, as soon as we do something positive to reverse that trend, we get all sorts of inane comments about special RAF privilege, yadda, yadda, yap, yap, nag….Just be thankful you’ll get to see one of these superb jets back in the air, be it in ‘official’ 70s decals or not – and if it is (with the RAF’s blessing).. it might just help reverse this apathy about restoring a bit of pride into what was once a bluddy good (and proud) nation of aircraft designers, builders, flyers and engineers… and still is, in some quarters!
Amen! Huzzah!!
I do wish more people felt like this.
I wish you guys the very best in getting her back into the skies, and applaud your efforts to promote our heritage – and get a more than a few quid into charitable causes along the way. I’m sure you won’t mind me saying “That’s very British of you sir!”
Roy.
The last time she was up for sale, I called the vendor in the USA only to be told she had been sold. They would not tell me who owned her, or even what state (geographically) she was in.
Apparently a megaton of sea hawk spares went to the usa with her – and we want em!
I’d love to know where she is too!
Roy.
