    Su-30s for Uganda. Or not?

It seems the reporting about the sale of Su-30s to Uganda is likely to be wrong. Or should we interpret the silence of the Ugandese minister of defence as a sign that something will be ordered anyway?

    Uganda denies buying Russian jets

Ugandan army spokesperson Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye dismissed the reports as untrue.

“We had negotiations with the Russians over the jet fighters but upon realising that the cost was too high, we decided otherwise,” he said. “We never entered into an agreement with them.”

Instead, he said, the Ugandan airforce decided to send its six MIG-21 fighter planes for overhaul to Russia about two weeks ago. He did not say at what cost.

Defence minister Crispus Kiyonga said he first needed to see the details of the media reports before commenting.

Russia signs $1.2 bln contract for jet fighter delivery to Algeria, Uganda

Russia’s state arms exporter Rosoboronexport has signed two contracts worth $1.2 billion on the deliveries of 16 jet fighters to Algeria and another six fighters to Uganda, the Russian Vedomosti daily reported on Monday.

The two African nations will receive different models of the Su-30 Flanker fighters. Algiers will receive 16 Su-30-MKI(A)s and Kampala will receive six Su-30MK2s, the paper said.

    MICA

When did the MICA VL plans get blocked. Is there any good source around about this? (Romanian newspapers?)

andrei, the Mica in the article you linked reffers to Mica VL, the SAM version. Purchasing it together with Mistral was an almost done deal last year (needed to replace the old 57 mm guns protecting the airbases) but the deal was dropped after a corruption scandal (the system was around 320 mil. euros, but Romania was supposed to pay 400, the diference of 80 milion Euros going into the pockets of some middlemen – and surely higher up the political-business chain).
Far less than 80 Lancers are in service, they will be dropped from service as soon as the F-16s will be made operational.

$97mil for a Viper? For a long-term F-16 user which has all supporting infrastructure already provided.. And I thought that Rafale was expensive…

Raising my threshold for real F-35’s price to > $150mil.

Note: ‘ The total value, if all options are exercised, could be as high as $2.9 billion.’ Which means that it could be a lot less too.
This is a text from an FMS notification to Congress, which regularly include insanely high values. Earlier this year an FMS notification suggested that Ghana (!) was interested to buy 4(!) C27Js for a price possibly as high as USD 650 m(!). Conclusion: values mentioned in FMS notifications should be ignored.

I presume they have been produced in Russia but is there anyone who can explain why these Mi-17s are assembled/prepared for delivery in the Czech Republic?

    Tanzania gets new F-7s?

Earlier I noticed this blogger claiming to have spotted new F-7s for Tanzania

    http://africanbushpilot.blogspot.com/2009/08/tanzanias-air-force-might-on-display.html

Another blogger shows some interesting pictures of Tanzanian F-6s (flown by pilots with leather helmets?!) but also adds that all the remaining older Tanzanian F-7s are rotting away in a corner of the airfield:
    http://benwilhelmi.typepad.com/benwilhelmi/2009/04/tanzanian-air-force.html

This suggests that the two seater Mig-21/F-7 shown on the picture on the first blog really is a new F-7.

    Ugliest jet

not military, but so immensely ugly I just had to mention it here. And as the Air_Tractor_AT-802U shows, you could make this beast into something military too…

The m-15 belphegor (even the name is ugly)

    New ‘Sudanese’ aircraft

The head of the Safat manufacturing complex Brigadier General Mirghani Idriss told reporters that a five-year plan was put in place to produce the first model of the plane named ‘Safat-01’ and that 10 more will be forthcoming.
Idriss added that the planes are Sudanese manufactured up to 80% with assistance from Chinese and Russian partners. He also said that the cost of the plane ‘Safat-01’ is $15,000. The official said that in 3 years the plane manufacturing and maintenance will be “Sudanized” adding that the maintenance section of the complex will primarily focus on civilian aviation.

Sudan’s president said on Sunday sanctions could not block development in his country, as he unveiled its first home-manufactured aircraft — a $15,000 training plane that runs on car fuel

    Belgian bargains

The belgian newspaper the De Standaard has reported early 2009 that officials from Jordan and Belgium are finalizing a deal for 8-9 more F-16s, at the bargain price of EUR 7 million (about $9.25 million). A Parliamentary Defence Committee document states a set transaction price of EUR 32 million, however, which seems more reasonable.

Well, column 5 is a condition category. None of them is ready to flight. Not mention that fuselage is so aged, that even with new engines no country will allow this thing to fly over.

The aircraft range from category II to V, with the lowest number being the best condition. I do not know however what the categories actually mean. Ukraine has however been able to export quite some surplus aircraft in recent years .

Taiwan might be very interested in these aircraft, but as is rightly pointed out the UAE will have to take into account that China may punish it for selling the Mirages to Taiwan. Furthermore also France would risk an angry reaction from China, as any resale of the Mirages will almost certainly have to be approved by France, assuming that the original contract between France and the UAE includes the normal end-user clauses. On top of that comes the fact that any servicing of the planes would have to be done by French companies.

Other possible customers for the Mirages should may be get more consideration. Egypt still has some outdated and old Mirage-5s, F-7s and Mirage-2000s. The UAE Mirages would fit them well from a political perpective. Some years ago they showed interest in MiG-29s, just so they would not be completely on the USA. Also the UAE may find it attractive to support the Egyptians, including to balance Saudi.

The UAE has also supplied military aid to Morocco. May be an interesting option?

Or Algeria, to replace the MiG-29SMT which they returned to the producer and the older MiG-29s they still have? It would also decrease their dependence on Russia as an arms supplier.
