A good example of this is the IWM north a great idea but actually has little to look at compared to Lambeth for example.

I like how IWM North have a token section of Hess’s 110, surely to lure a few punters in.
Just read on another forum that one of the stars and bars under the wings should be bigger than the other. Has this been replicated?
Will it be at….
There are plenty of original photos of Snafu and none of them show the stripes extending above the star and bars. Most of these photos are of her after she bellylanded and was then scrapped so it would make more sense to recreate her as she ended her life, so to speak. Plus, as a matter of simple aesthetics the full invasion stripes look very over the top.
Must be Russia as Lenin is overseeing the work in photo 14…
The RAFM’s Sopwith Triplane was ‘restored’ in the late 60s with ‘all wooden parts renewed – only metal parts retained’. Does this make it a replica? new build? composite? It’s getting on for 50 years ago so does it count as ‘vintage’?
They may have done ‘LOTS’ of research but the B&W photos of the original Snafu don’t show the invasion stripes going right round the fuselage….

They could always park the 111 out on the base of the demolished hangar…
Yes, plenty of scrap yards do not care where things have come from. They are more to blame than the thieves.
At least the numbers of people on the excursions are strictly limited. Still annoying though, and I fear that they will be over it like vultures.
I’m inclined to agree, though as someone said a while ago it’s a war museum not a film props museum. Though it’s a bit rich for the IWM to be banging on about provenance when they’ve had a plastic Mustang on display for the past 15 years…

Its easy to work on the basis that 95% of the public wouldnt know the difference so paint them in Luftwaffe markings but that is not the remit of the IWM . Its about preserving items that are genuinely historic -therefore
the Storch and Amiot being representative isnt enough.so its better to have no Luftwaffe a/c at all, rather than have licence built examples of a/c that are pretty much identical?
To be fair the IWM didn’t go out if their way to acquire the CASA 111. It came from OFMC who were intending to fly it. The Luftwaffe is pretty much covered by the RAFM so maybe Duxford should concentrate on other areas. Who knows. I’d personally like to see license built Luftwaffe copies painted in Luftwaffe markings.
This video was uploaded today with some more recent footage. Not entirely sure what’s going on though…
The Harrier is still in front line service, albeit with the US marines…
