Well it’s an original turret but I don’t think it’s original to what it’s attached to…

Now if they could combine the internal fittings with the IWM nose….

It sure is, you can see where they painted ‘Handley Page Halifax III’ onto it when it was displayed on Oxford Street in 1945.
Never mind the ‘complete’ Hendon Halifax, what about the Friday the 13th nose art? It’s unceremoniously stuck half way up a wall with no interpretation or signage and is flaking away
Was looking for something in the Roger Freeman collection and came across this with the caption ‘ P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft of the 78th Fighter Group at Duxford ‘
Yes, it’s a well-known photo..
Duxford Tuesday 24th May:
An unusual sortie today involved all four Classic Wings Tiger Moths and Spitfire PV202, all filmed from Robinson R44 G-CDSY. Time will no doubt reveal all.
Britain’s Got (fighter pilot) Talent..?
Follow the money. ie, get a proper job.
According to Roger Freeman, this is what the IWM originally wanted to squeeze/dangle in the AAM…
‘With a view to making this truly comprehensive […] the IWM […] made a request to the USAF Museum for a P-38, P-40, B-24, AT-6, F-4, F-5, F-15, F-16, F-18, F-111, A-10, C-130 and U-2. Seven of these types were still being sought when the American Air Museum in Britain was officially opened…’

Here’s a super rare shot of Big Beautiful Doll landing, taken from the opposite direction:

Fair enough. This is Freeman’s complete caption for the photo:
“A long shot of 83rd Fighter Squadron P-51 Mustang ‘HL:F’ coming in to land with drop tanks still under its wings. The photograph was taken from the south-east side of the airfield, looking north-west across the head of the runway towards the 84th Fighter Squadron blister hangars and dispersal area. Beyond is the A505 main road. At the time Duxford had a single steel mat runway over turf. (C. Tom Bendorf)”
Almost. More like this

There is a tower visible on the horizon which I believe you can still see on Google Earth here
This is roughly the same view today
The photo is in fact back to front. If you flip it horizontally in Paint it is the exact same photo of HL-F as seen in Freeman’s The Mighty Eighth in Colour.
The location is the SE side of the airfield looking NW. The A505 is in the distance.
An American style military mess should be there or even a 1940s/1950s themed burger bar with background music of the time. I was told that would not happen as it would “stink the place out”, but with modern extraction systems, I think it would be far more inviting than what is there now. .
Perhaps it could extract the dust out as well…?
