Hi all;
This very interesting bit of info was posted over on Hyperscale;
“On 28/6/42 ET574 Piloted by F/Sgt DCH Copping 785025 left 260 for a ferry flight to an RSU . The A/C flew with u/c locked down due to damage . An incorrect course was set and the A/C was thought to have crashed in the Desert due to fuel exhaustion.
F/Sgt Copping is listed as missing on that date
Now I’m not saying this is the A/C , just that it MIGHT be, in view of :-
a) there being no apparent signs of Battle damage
b) the fact that the U/C was wiped off in the crash”Could be a possibility?
Regards;
Steve
The elevator looks like it has flak damage. Nevertheless, that at least tallies with the physical evidence so shouldn’t be dismissed.
Looks like they tried to get at the guns with a can opener!
I fail to understand why every little panel has to be damaged in their treasure hunt. What’s the story around the oil tank panel in front of the windscreen?
Perhaps they thought the pilot was trying to smuggle out some antiquities when he ran out of fuel? Muppets.
The ring and bead gunsight went missing too…
Agreed, this should not go back into the air. If anything if should be left as it is (note to video people, leave it be) unlike Duxford’s 109…
Yeah, that’s make more sense re. the battery cells. I was getting ahead of myself! What’s the bloke holding in the second to last photo?
There’s plenty of flare cartridges on the ground, so maybe the pilot was able to be picked up…
It’s in the youtube video you. Amazing photos!
I thought she liked planes!
We are in trouble. It’s been posted on imgur gallery. This is now public knowledge.
p.s. dont read the comments, they will damage your IQ.
‘As someone who appreciates random ****, Not bad.’
High brow stuff! IQ irreparably damaged…
Why?? :confused:
In which case he might not have bumped into any bad guys and therefore didn’t expend any ammo on this sortie, as opposed to being shot down in a combat scenario. Just a thought.
The amount of ammo would also back up the getting lost and running out of fuel theory.
I heard somewhere the other day that Spitfires had a mechanism to destroy the radio in such circumstances, so if it is missing then that’s probably a good sign.
If the pilot was picked up, would they not have at least salvaged the ammo and anything that could be easily detached?
I think it should be a case of swapsys.
Royal Air Force Museum donate there P40N to El Alamein Museum and some money (lottery or whatever), Egypt pay the finder a handsome finders fee and the complete time capsule RAF Kittyhawk goes to RAF Museum to sit next to Bf109G-2 Black 6.

Hendon is full of scrap as it is…
Really glad to see you on the forum Raphael. You really have caused quite a stir:D
I think most of us here are hoping to see this incredible find protected from the scrappers and vandals. Are you in any position to comment on the likely outcome please? Is the airframe in safe hands or have things got a little out of control since the find was reported to the authorities?
Would be great to hear you and your friend’s view of the situation.
Thanks.
How about trying to contact Wasalpan23, who uploaded the youtube footage?
