    Re. Snafu

Hampden98 asked on a locked thread

‘Why isn’t the canopy frame painted. I know it’s authentic but why?’

Maybe to make it look at a bubble canopy P-47D at distance? Like P-38s had polished noses to appear to be the unarmed variant. Just a guess…

your just hurting us now!seriously a series such as this is long over due.It brings back a memory of time team doing some aviation recovery some years ago. Alan

Ah yes.. the Time Team B-17. I remember their disappointment at being told that a crumpled chunk of metal was in fact the strongest part of the airframe.

I very much doubt that, it provides a significant source of revenue for the museum, with a major ongoing fundraising campaign in the US.

well, if they can’t decide what to put in the place and they need to half dismantle it to get anything in or out… Plus futuristic architecture only looks futuristic for so long.

Other than its a heck of a way from the car park for those of us getting old and infirm. It really needs that narrow guage railway set up to run shuttles all along the flightline. The IWM might even be able to tap another market if it were steam operated.

I think the railway has been ripped up and sold!

I hope the plastic Mustang goes, but who is going to want it? I’m surprised about the Avenger/Mitchell rumour but I do agree that their collection remit has to be a bit more focused. The AAM was/is a bad idea, I bet someone somewhere is regretting it.

Maybe that’ll explain the Land Warfare Hall situation? They can sell the lot for all I care, and a load of planes. They have far too much stuff and need a good clearout!

Out of interest, why do you think it was a bad idea, and why would IWM be regretting it?

Because space age architecture does not look space age forever. Since it opened in 97 it has gotten too cramped. I am not in favour of hanging aircraft from ceilings as if they are Airfix models but at least enable people to see them up close, not the case with the Avenger or the U2.

Wasn’t there some issue with the fake Mustang being painted as ‘Sherman Was Right’ as well? If they were so desperate for a Mustang they should have used the one at Lambeth. They don’t have a P38 Lightning either, why don’t they chuck a fibreglass one of those in there too?
