how would they fly it out of East Kirkby anyway? It only has half a runway! Plus they would need some kind of air traffic control system in place. I can’t really see it happening to be honest.

The B24 and P47 are both now at Hendon, I am pretty sure that they were only ever at Cosford to encourage people to go there as well as Hendon.

I remember reading an article by the director of the RAFM who was very sceptical of Duxford’s acquisitions. Duxford wants a Liberator so Duxford gets a Liberator etc etc. I have to agree that swapping a Liberator for a Spitfire must have raised a few eyebrows on both sides of the Atlantic and as someone said, why didn’t Duxford get the mock up? They do after all have a replica Mustang and they had already managed to acquire the nose section that became Fightin Sam but obviously that wasn’t good enough for the powers that be and as soon as the whole thing came along it was packed off back across the pond. I personally think the AAM was a bad idea, it wouldn’t surprise me if the IWM are regretting it.

Why would they rob guns from one aircraft for another??

I was thinking the same. If anyone would have a few spare guns lying around it’d be the IWM….

I remember reading an article by the director of the RAF Museum who was hardly complimentary about the American Air Museum, saying something along the lines of it being a conservation disaster. He was also critical of the IWM’s ability to “acquire” aircraft, Duxford wants a Liberator, Duxford gets a Liberator etc etc. I mean, wasn’t the Liberator swapped for a Spitfire? Strange.

Great photos David. For me they were some of Duxfords halcyon days, with hardly any fences, an untouched and undeveloped airfield, lack of red tape, and some great pioneers of our fledgling historic aviation scene. Happy days 🙂

I agree, back before the stupid American Air Museum, Airspace or whatever it’s called and the notion that aircraft in museums should hang from the ceiling. This might be controversial but I think Duxford has gone far too far, the IWM need to get some perspective.

    Not aviation related but….

200 years since Napoleon tried to invade Russia
200 years since Prime Minister Spencer Perceval was assassinated
100 years since the Titanic sank
