Guys, your in a pissing contest neither of you can win.
Give it up and lets get back to more interesting posts.

Few countries tolerate illegal fishing or border violations.
Even fewer shoot said illegal fishermen

[QUOTE=Route Pack Six]Oh do behave or we’ll have Unicorn send Carlo Kopp to your house as a dinner guest!;)QUOTE]
Trust me, thats a very nasty threat.
The man is the walking epitome of a bore.
He is so fanatical that it is almost impossible to have a reasoned discussion with the man.
In his world everyone else who does not agree with his ideas is a fool (this includes the RAAF and almost every other defence analyst) and any inconvenient facts that don’t fit with his theories are obviously misinformation spread by his detractors.
Seriously, being trapped with him over dinner would be a nice preview of purgatory.
I speak from experience by the way.

The RAN has the beginnings of a replacement program getting underway, at this time it is at the staff study stage.
One school of thought wants to continue the AWD program into six or nine units, providing a stable long-term replacement program and long term stability to the Australian shipbuilding industry.
Another school of thought argues that they are too large and a smaller sized vessel should be considered. This vessel, smaller than the AWD would initially replace the remaining FFG’s and in due course the Anzacs as well.
I personally think that long term construction of six or nine AWD’s makes sense, and them follow on with a replacement program for the Anzacs in 2020 time frame.
But defence bureacracy is impervious to common sense.

The Delhi sonar should look similar
Merci Snake, much appreciated.
A friend of mine is looking to build a 1/72 R/C scale model of the Delhi.
He has a pile of topside photos but wasn’t sure about the sonar.
It will make a nice counterpoint to the Kirpan and Godivari that he has already operational.
Cheers

Unicorn,
Platina sonar on Sovremenny is really not that big, the really protruding ones are Polinom on Udaloy and Zvezda on Neustrashimy. I haven’t seen a single photo of Delhi class underwater part, but judging that they use the same sonars as Talwar class, You can have a look at Talwar model, photo is available at Bharat-Rakshak website.
Unfortunately Bharat-Rakshak has been down all week.
If anyone has a line drawing or photo of the Talwar showing the sonar arrangements I would be grateful.
Cheers

Yes, but that is paying for a large army, a mediocre air force, a navy composed of speedboats full of machine gun and RPG wielding Revolutionary Guard and three Kilos.
Oh yes, and lots of money going into missile and nuclear arms technology.

“Therefore, the armed forces of Pakistan Insha Allah will keep growing from strength to strength,” the president remarked, adding: “We are not into an arms race.”
For a country not in an arms race they sure spend a large amount of their scarce resources on the military.

Funny, the RAAF has lost a total of three F/A-18 aircraft in 20 years of operation, whereas they lost a much larger number of Mirages in a similar period, undertaking less demanding activities (and no combat operations) whereas the RAAF’s Hornets have undertaken combat ops in Iraq.
The RAAF is sold on the benefits of twin engine aircraft, and its one of the issues they have with the F35 that it is a single engine aircraft.
An engine failure on a Hornet is a “divert to nearest runway and broadcast an alert”. An engine failure on the F35 is most likely a lost aircraft.
Unicorn.
Ah, thank you for that info Santi.
If anyone is thinking of fitting Tomahawk TASM or TLAM or considering an ABM role then they have to be talking strike length as that is the only size capable of accomodating SM-3 and Tomahawk.

Compare the loss rate of the Sea Harrier / Harrier / AV8B with similar single engine fighter aircraft such as the F16.
I think that you will find it’s loss rate is higher, mostly because of the unforgiving marine environment that it operates in but otherwise not out of line for similar single engines fighter aircraft such as the F16, Mirage 2000 etc.
The RAAF experienced a significantly higer loss rate for the single engined Mirage IIIs it operated compared to the twin engined F/A-18’s that replaced it. Some of it is due to greater reliability of the more modern engines and technology of the Hornet, but mostly due to the fact that if one engine starts acting up, you can shut it down and still get home on the other.

Busted Doc!
However I defer to your vastly greater experience in the area. 🙂

The Mk-41 comes in the same size above deck for each 8 cell launcher.
The differences are below deck.
The Mk-41 comes in three lengths.
Self-defence (sized for VLSS and not a whole lot else).
Its quite short and makes minimal demands on the below decks space. This is the system fitted to the RAN’s FFG’s, the Anzacs and many of the Meko’s around the world. Its the most easily refitted MK-41 as it can be fitted to most classes with minimal disruption to existing ships services.
Tactical (sized for SM-1. SM-2, Harpoon and Asroc but can also take VLSS).
Makes a larger demand on space below decks. This was proposed for the RAN’s Adelaide class, replacing the 76mm gun on top of the superstructure block and replacing the Mk-13 launcher up forward with the same 5 inch gun as the Anzac’s. For reasons of cost it was not deemed feasable or effective to undertake what would have been a massive rebuild on what is a 30 year old design and on hulls that have seen a lot of hard service.
I understand this is what is fitted to the F100 and Nansen classes. It is probably too large for anything much under about 4000 tonnes due to the demands on both space and below deck “height” (a hull has to be a certain minimum depth to accomodate the Tactical launcher’s length).
Strike (Sized for SM-3 and Thomahawk but in common with the others can accept the same ordinance as the smaller cells).
This is what was fitted to the modified Spruances and is fitted to the Arleigh Burkes, Tico’s and Kongo’s. It is what will probably go into the KDX-III and will be specified for the AWD. Anyone who wants any sort of ABM capability has to be talking Strike length cells.
It is so long you really have to design the ship around it, trying to refit it to an existing design is a massive and probably futile effort. The Spruances could only cope with it because they were so large and had a lot of redundant space available as part of the design to accomodate additional upgrades.
6000 tonnes plus is probably the minimum size to accomodate the Strike length unless you design the ship around it and not much else.
Hope this helps.
