If posted overseas the RAF VC-10 was also known as the ‘Goeshomein Bird’.

No problem James. If I had seen this thread earlier I might have been able to solve the problem as I was at Old Warden yesterday and I could have used their Lysander.

As someone who uses a lot of photographs as reference material for scale drawings, to me the difference is an optical illusion and I would not use those two photographs to compare spat shapes as they are taken from different heights and angles.
The red outline spat is more of a side view shot as can be seen by the shadow of the wheel spat in the background. The green outline is taken from a higher angle, more rear spat, and that could quite easily distort the image as you are looking down on the spat and it would then be elongated and compressed. Perspective comes into play here. That is just my interpretation of the photographs
Out of curiosity and as I will be going to Duxford this weekend I will try a photographic experiment on their Lysander, if it is in a convenient location, and see if I can recreate the same images.

Just a few other piccies from the day.

This is the best overall shot of the wing I could get and the placard that was with the airframe.

At the bottom left of Page 56 of ‘British Military Airfield Architecture’ by Paul Francis there is a photograph of a ‘Fabric Store’ at Framlingham from almost the same angle as your first photo. Looks almost identical.

Love the jumping aeroplanes on the virtual tour. If you move your mouse very slowly up and down as the aircraft is off the ground it gives, with the flames coming out the back and the shadow on the ground, the impression of it flying along.
Sad I know.

Like Guzzineil I have a Z1 with a 10x zoom and no anti-shake, and I have no problems taking static or taxying shots, which is what I use for my scale drawings, and I don’t usually bother too much with the flying shots but the flying shots I have taken have usually been of aircraft landing or taking off as they are at a slower speed. (See attached ‘Up in the air’ link). Once you get used to the shutter lag the Z1 is ideal for that but an aircraft at speed is much more hit and miss.

Never had a problem yet on my motorbike, although at the end of the day it does involve a lot of weaving through slow moving traffic. If you are coming in a car then park at the Land Warfare Hall (LWH) end. You always have somewher to sit if it is too hot or even wet and if you should stock up on goodies, then you have somewhere close to hand to off load them and you don’t have to carry it around all day.
