The Visitors Centre/Shop is open again after its refurbishment and it may be an optical illusion but it’s the same size as before but had a few walls added and seems bigger inside. On site there was a Smash & Grab team dismantling an Apache helicopter/ZJ230 outside the Classic Wings office. Apparently it didn’t want to fly home and was being trucked back to Wattisham. It was still there when I left and had a rope crowd barrier around it so could still be there tomorrow. Duxford based Chipmunk/WK522 was out doing circuits as was Harvard/’Wacky Wabbit’. Highlight of the day was the first engine run of the French Sea Fury. It was tied down on the ORP at the 06 end of the runway and had a couple of low rev engine runs.

A Smash & Grab team are at Duxford stripping an Apache helicopter to go on a low loader that has just turned up.

Another very wind chill cold day at Duxford although it did seem to warm up a bit when the clouds rolled in. A few war birds did venture out into the sunshine but mainly due to hangar moves and the Classic Wings Harvard/Wacky Wabbit was doing circuits when I left.

As part of the Museum’s RAF Centenary Programme members of the Michael Beetham Conservation Centre are currently conducting a survey of the aircraft in the Museum’s Battle of Britain Hall prior to the creation of a new permanent exhibition in this area. In this short film Rebecca Dalley, the Museum’s Centenary Programme Manager, invites members of the public to peer beneath the skin of these iconic aircraft and partake in a once in a life-time opportunity to view their inner workings.

A quiet day at Duxford apart from the vans and cars arriving outside AirSpace as the Quilt Show hits town, Friday to Mothering Sunday, and a constant stream of cement mixer wagons heading down to ARCo as they were laying the floor to the Lancaster Hangar. The Red Bull Matadors flew in first thing and then late morning took off and returned a short while later for a bit of aerobatics over the airfield. Among the GA arrivals was the Boultbee Chipmunk and I believe the crew may have been going flying later in the ARCo two seater Spitfire.

The engine covers to the Me.109/Spitfire/Hurricane have been removed so just a few record shots.

Meanwhile in the main museum building there have been a couple of changes. Electric light has been installed in the Halifax cockpit and the area around the Tornado/Buccaneer has been cleared and the blue carpet has been pulled up.

Was planning to go to London today, instead I’m enjoying the increasing wind chill here at Duxford. I’ll probably be down tomorrow.

My take on the day.

I always wonder about IWM London’s Lancaster nose section DV372- what happened to the rest of the aircraft, and when?
Do you not know how to Google?? Key words – Lancaster/DV372
Built in Manchester, it was delivered to 467sqn in November 1943 where it was coded PO-F and named ‘Old Fred’. Written off in October 1945 while operating with 1651CU, the nose section was preserved and since 1958 it has lived in the Imperial War Museum at Lambeth in London. It is seen in temporary storage at Duxford while the Lambeth museum was being refurbished. 14-7-2013
