High winds have forced the Imperial War Museum (IWM) Duxford to close.

Just weeks after the museum’s roof was severely damaged by storms, another area of the building’s hangar has been destroyed.

The damage happened overnight and the museum is now closed until further notice.

Esther Blaine, the museum’s public relations manager, said: “Due to structural damage caused by high winds, IWM Duxford is closed until further notice.

“The damage is similar to the damage to the roof we experienced shortly after Christmas although this time it has happened to a different area of the hangar.

“We have no other option but to close – it simply isn’t safe to have members of the public on site and safety is paramount to us.

“We understand that this news will be disappointing to visitors hoping to enjoy our February half term activities and we apologise for any inconvenience caused.

“The next update will be provided on Tuesday, February 18.”

A bit of refurbishment has taken place in the entrance to hangar 4, as part of Historic Duxford, in what used to be the briefing area used by the 78th Fighter Group, USAAF, when they were based at Duxford during WWII. The area is aimed primarily at school parties with the jacket and hats available to try on. I think it could do with some old school style radiators instead of the modern hardware though.

Spitfire/MH434 has been replaced with a Chipmunk in hangar 3 and at the other end the Me.108 has been replaced with Spitfire/SM845.

With very few visitors about I gave the Panorama Mode on my Sony NEX-6 an outing. As well as overall shots I got in close and used the Pano mode as a ‘w i d e’ angle lens.

It’s up to the Americans, not Duxford, whether there is an Air Day or not. Judging by the amount of visitors at Duxford yesterday, a Saturday, they seem to be doing alright at getting people through the doors.

A quiet Saturday at Duxford but plenty of visitors. Terence The Tug was out and about towing Bulldog T1/XX543 from hangar 2 out to the Jet Pan and which went flying later on and inside Hangar 2 Chipmunk/WK522 is finally sitting on all three wheels although it still has a few parts still awaiting fitting.

With it quiet at Duxford at the moment I feel a trip to the Science Museum, a few years since I was last there, coming up with another London Night Shoot thrown in – probably around the Bomber Command Memorial as I’ve not been there yet.

I should imagine DCW and/or Duxman were probably there today so might have something to report – if anything happened :D.

It is very quiet at Duxford at the moment and not a lot to report apart from the same, same or the occasional visiting aircraft. With the sunshine forecast for today I would have gone down but there was frost and ice on the roads this morning and over the years I’ve only ever come off my motorbikes four times, all on black ice, and the last time it hurt. I chicken out now :D. May be later in the week for me.

A beautiful day out at Duxford with wall to wall blue sky, a gentle breeze blowing and warm enough not to have to wear gloves but enough of the weather forecast. I was walking past the hangar base between 3 and 4 hangars when I heard behind me what tuned out to be the ARCo tractor heading for 3 hangar. Well I just had to go and have a look. The Classic Wings yellow Tiger Moth ventured out into the daylight so the Me.108 could be extracted from its winter resting place. A bit later one of the Classic Wings silver Tiger Moths went flying and some of the Duxford based GA types were doing circuits along with a few visitors.
