I wonder if Sweden will implement this upgrade? Seems like a no-brainer, in combination with the Meteor it should make for a quite lethal BVR system even against “LO” targets.

Sorry, it’s not on the table at the moment. Don’t see it happening at all for the swedish fleet, my best bet would be that the Czech’s are interested.

Signs of the swedish air force opening up to buying the Boeing/Saab plane if it wins. If the politicians can accept the price that is.

How many sidewinders can be carried internally? Only 2 or is it more?

This is a perfect discussion to have in the Eurofighter thread.

But who would be interested in such a program? Most European countries are going for the F-35.

I think most of them are going to be interested, eventually. I don’t think we should look at this as a Tornado replacement, even if that’s what Germany officially calls it. I think it will be more of an eventual Eurofighter replacement, in other words multi-role.

Interesting. So they don’t think they will be able to have a UCAV flying alongside the Typhoon? The plot thickens….

Here in Sweden back in the days they said the Saab Draken would be the last manned fighter we build. An so it goes..
Sure unmanned aerial vehicles have come an incredible long way these last 20 years, but manned fighters are still here for the next decades to come.

With some pretty competent Su-30MKM for air superiority I really don’t see the need for either the Rafale or the Typhoon in Malaysia. After all those jets costs a lot more than what a Gripen will do. I think the winner will depend on who provides the most beneficial financing package rather than the jets themselves.

Yes, but if you look at other European countries that are in the process of buying new fighter jets, then (with the notable exception of oil-rich Norway) the numbers tend to end at the very low end; this includes the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden.

General disarmament have been the thing in Europe since the cold war ended but Finland is in general an exception from this.

Officially no, but Saab (who probably has some inside information) has indicated 40-60 fighter jets.

It could also have just been Saab’s own expectations that was communicated.

Actually it was Saab who said that it seems Finland was interested in a smaller number of a/c, perhaps as low as 40 — this is in favor of the F-35 (unless Sweden can offer some “equalizers” like sharing AEW capabilities with Finland).

The only thing I have heard from Saab is that they are expecting a 40+ requirement in Finland. As I said most communication about the program from Finnish officials, from the last year, seems to indicate that there is a will to keep the current number of fighters.

Sweden should offer 40-50 Gripen E

Hard to say, Finland have expressed interest in keeping todays number of fighters. If that will actually be the case then it would probably be what’s speaking against the F-35 in Finland. Also I would not count out the F-18, I’m guessing the line will be kept open until a decision is made Finland, by the US Navy and probably a deal with Kuwait.

the amounts seem small. more like modification or follow up to existing customer.

This is my guess as well! Maybe UAE will upgrade the 340s to the same standard as the new planes?

And by the way JakobS, you are per Se, a “people on the internet”

Yes, of course I am the douchy guy on the internet. I am that stupid retareded guy who uses common sense and calls out bullcrap rumors made up by people with nothing better to do.

    Sure I am the troll.

Not one I can post without betraying who told me.

You don’t have any source to betray, the truth is that you don’t know crap. You have just made up some crap that you think sounds great to whatever agenda you are having.

The real truth is however that people who do actually know anything about these kind of things, they don’t tell it to anyone. They are professional people and they don’t have any desire to sit on a message board somewhere to seek confirmation.

It’s always the people who pretends to know stuff that are the trolls and it’s always the people who actually knows stuff that you will never notice because they are professionals.

The reason I hear Saab dropped out is that they didn’t want their numbers released publicly, which this Danish report did. Still gun shy from swisserland maybe. They didn’t want people looking at those performance charts and seeing where the gripen falls, or what it costs. but thats none of my business.

That is an absolutely ridiculously retarded thing you claim, the stupidity of some people on the internet never cease to amaze me.

The reason Dassault and Saab did not compete in Denmark was because Denmark is a partner in the JSF-project and that the evaluation stated different offsets for the F-35 compared to the other fighters.

Boeing and Eurofighter seems pretty pissed about the danish evaluation. The official evaluation calculated with 6000h for both SH and Typhoon, while it claimed 8000h for the F-35, thus increasing the numbers required for the Typhoon and SH to 34 planes. The very strange requirement for only a two seater SH also raised the numbers with another 4 planes for the SH, making the demand 38 planes.

Both Boeing and Eurofighter claims their planes can fly as much as the F-35. Eurofighter claims 8300h for the Typhoon if it is used as the current danish F-16s and Boeing is claiming up to 9500h for the SH when it is not carrier based.

Although I am very confident that the choice is still F-35, Eurofighter have been invited by the government party to give their view on the flight hours.

Could the deal be halted or is it too late for that?

It is way too late. Besides, let’s remember that the Gripen still is the preferred aircraft for the air force.
