Most sources put it at 6 + 6.

But what is interesting is that news is filtering out…. the Swedes are throwing in either 2 or 3 Erieyes which apparently swayed the decision.

btw, KJLost, the radar on the PKX, what is it? It does seem to be related to the land based phased array by ADD.

I agree with what you wrote but I still think RAM (or some SAM / Anti-missile system) is important in modern day combat. If one of these new ships had a couple of North Korean Silkworm missiles locked on it I bet the Captain would disagree with you and would want a SEA RAM system available to him. I know I would.

This class of ship is built for the purpose of engaging most gun armed NK patrol crafts which is typical involving in protecting NK’s fishing fleet. If a missile armed FAC is detected, I doubt a gun only patrol boat will be send by SK.

SU-33 from Russia in the interim. A new type, even if it was developed from the existing J-11B , would take additional years to qualify and reach certification. This would allow PLA-N to start training even before any future CV, Varyag or otherwise is ready.

Without a better surveillance capability, what’s good to have to MiG-29s unless you want to one airborne 24 x 7 which is extremely unlikely and very very expensive.

If it is just meant to be on alert, they must have a capability to at least detect incoming LTTE ultralights.

Politically speaking, LTTE might have wanted it this way. Those ultralights are hardly a militarily decisive weapon. It’s more a high profile political tool, forcing the government to respond perhaps excessively.

It’s kind of interesting that they seemed to have copied everything that they liked from the Russians. The only concept they haven’t copied is kashtan, but PLAN was said to not be too impressed by it.

    Not exactly true…

Photos have surfaced recently of a gun/missile CIWS that looks suspiciously like the Palma 😀

    hmm… new LPD.

    http://www.tnial.mil.id/tabid/61/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/34/PT-PAL-BANGUN-DUA-KAPAL-PERANG-TNI-AL.aspx

As Ja pointed out, the remainder Sigma class corvettes have are under construction. There were earlier attempts to change these notably to Russian vessels presumably due to vested interests of those involved..

The National Covertte program at PT PAL seems to be around for a long time and had it start when they started with the FPB-57.

What is the survival rate against modern manpads?

Not good but then again, any platform (fixed or helo) performing COIN operations against targets armed with modern MANPADS faces the same risks.

Probably the more cost effective options would be Super Tucanos. Simple, easy to operate does not tax much on the infrastructure. Uses many of the existing weapons on their MD500s.

    Simple.

Pressure. Knowing that a competitor has a better product often forces the other party to lower the price or provide offsets. It’s better than a straight buy.

You might want to drop a email to Rear Adm. Victor G. Guillory, commander, Amphibious Force, U.S. 7th Fleet. He was the Ops officer on watch in the CIC during the shootdown. His career seem to have survived the incident pretty well.
