Of course you have two very big empty hangars close to hand at Llanbedr which could possibly be used for temporary conservation/ storage, Not forgetting Valley personel who might be persuaded to get involved as an exercise??

I think about April time. Doesn’t look so secret given that you can judge the back drop. That wing has been dry for a while as well and it hasn’t fallen apart. Very concerning state of affairs i say. I’m not trying to sh** stir things by the way if anyone thinks that. I’m just an avid enthusiast who frequents the area, and is concerned over the fate of this wreck. I certainly wouldn’t drag it out with tractor and chains, but it’s just that frustrating. They could be trying to unbolt the thing instead of bloody measuring it!!

Yup, survey after survey. Meanwhile joe bloggs with his hacksaw and lump hammer is waiting in the wings to get a trophy, and he doesn’t even need to get his feet wet.

That poly tunnel at Cosford will be empty sometime soon as well. Perfect!. The P38 would be a very manageable project to preserve once broken down to it’s smain assemblies would it not?. Just as an idea, it could be left to soak in an average sized home swimming pool?

That being said, there will be countless future situations where a Nimrod would be invaluable.Just need to farm out RAF SAR now and that’s just about the final nail in the coffin.

When i say ‘what’s up with folk?’, i’m refering to the powers that be that always seem to take hold of situations like this and then make a mountain out of a mole hill. I’m not naive as to the red tape, and recognise that there are hurdles to overcome before a recovery would be made, but the actual physical recovery of said item really wouldn’t be beyond the realms of the forum folk would it?. As regards preservation, again, this could be achieved with the help of a local museum. I bet us normal folk could pull this off.

Pathetic that it’s within wading distance to the shore, and it’s good condition that it’s still sitting there. Beggars belief!!. Definate candidate for a forum recovery.

Hello Ian, I stripped it to nuts and bolts, but i had the AP for the seat for re assembly. I only had the seat pan, headbox and rails blasted. Everything else was either refinished by myself or replaced with boxed time expired stuff off evilbay at a time when it was plentiful. The main gun was in good nick, so i left it as is. I sold the seat a couple of years ago in my wisdom, but i’ll find my photos and post them.

During the restoration of my MK4 BSC Lightning seat, i used a paint brand called HYCOTE satin black. I swear by this stuff as it goes on a dream and dries fast. I’ve never used a aerosol paint that’s as good as this. As a little secret, i then give it a polish with Autosol which gives it depth without too much sheen and makes the paint look like it’s always been there. I’ve used this technique on some of my ww2 German bayonet scabbards as well as guns and aircraft parts. Previous to applying the black i, i used a high build yellow primer (also by HYCOTE) to mask any pitting in the ally. Blasting is a must though. I paid £50 to have all my seat parts blasted.

How about Birchwood Casey Aluminium Black. It’s a treatment similar to gun blue that’s for aluminium. Might be good for the smaller parts. I’ve used it on some of my guns with good results. This is the U.S website, but the product is freely available over here in the UK.

Not sure the ‘People’ actually give a toss whether they build a Mosquito or not. If it doesn’t say i phone or HD ready, then the majority of modern folk are probably not interested. Maybe we should have a scratch around in our collections and garden sheds and build the ‘Forum’s Mosquito’. Sorry for being a bit negative, but i guess it’s just a sign of the times.
