im 391, the falkland’s boast
landed 83 on bateson’s coast
since been passed
from pillar to post
lookin for the hands
that love the most
fearing the crusher
fearing the ghost
braving the weather
in search of a host.
my poem to 391, by Pete.
(ok i guess when she landed 83 ! )
I’m not sure we want to see you displaying your private parts, in the garage or out. 😮
I’ll show you my radome, if you show me your’s 😮
🙂
hey , 391 still alive.
EMR have phoned, pictures on the way of her in the yard.
EMR wish to do a deal, though they stress it’s not the ‘norm’
then again
when was 391 ever the ‘norm’
good luck 391
And look what appeared on Ebay…
AVRO VULCAN NOSE RADOME item #5668404732 (£45)
This is not from 391 definately.
I have in my hall the entire radar, cone , everything.
I spent a lot of effort to aquire it !
it will go back on 391
i collected as much as i could in a day and night (including getting locked in the scrapyard !)
to ‘save’ anything from 391 in case the hammer fell.
total cost £400 in fuel and scrapman bills. Iwill make a private display of all the parts in my garage if 391 is not saved. Anyone wanting to see pics of the stash of goods, ill post in the photo album
will put link on this thread this evening
391 – refuses to die !
Unless XL391 can be bought for a few £100’s I would say let her go. It will always be remembered as the Blackpool Vulcan. Mr Bateson should have took my offer 7 years ago, but there we go!
A large offer ? 😮
well I doubt we can get the cockpit for 100’s.
Problem is that scrap alloy is around £200 – £300 a tonne (pure £600 tonne)
391 has been weighed:
John from the weighbridge has her at 4 tonnes.
so there we have £1200 straight away, plus handling, plus they may want a profit, so we are back approaching 1500- 2K
Speaking to the recycle yard, thay are quite friendly and actually can see the value of the Vulcan outside of the scrap value. This recycle yard are actually being quite reasonable. They have put the cockpit to one side. Myself and John H are currently negociating.
It took a while to track her down and get through to these people, but as i said they are ok to talk to. They listen to you.
not like the ape men
so : 391 lives on !!!! for at least a few days, she dont wanna go !!!!!!!!
vulcan love, 391 and John H are players in this game, who else is in? who else is prepared to put in some cash. I have a quote of £300 for transport 50 mile radius of liverpool.
I can , at a push accomodate the craft, but not for long time.
Anyone know the curator of HACK GREEN NUCLEAR BUNKER???
it would be a great place to have 391 !!
photos to follow soon of 391’s new temporary home in the re-cycle yard.
we know she was rolled off, so we await the new pics.
I should have them by Tomorrow.
over and out 391 Lovers !
Well, that’s a story for the Grandkids 😀
What did BNFL want you for anyway? They experimenting with alternative renewable energy sources??? 😮
may be no grandkids if i sat on top of that olympus too long !!!!!!!
BNFL are called out as ‘experts’ on radiation leaks.
they should know (quotes recent court case on leaking radiactive lorry)
they brought 2 geiger counters to my house, 2 police (one sergeant , one beat bobby) and 2 men from springfield reprocessing plant, preston.
I actually did not want the fuss, but the police were persistant on the phone they visit me, and sure i wanted to make sure i had not inhaled the ‘dust’
-hey , those scrapmen , they were cutting up all sorts, they think the radiation is funny, thier advice to me when i asked them if they knew any more on the radiation report from the re-cycle plant was :
“god , stop whining pete, your as bad as my grandad. Just dont get it near your bollo**s and you’ll be ok.”
my reply:
“sure but how is 391? is she defo gone?”
scrapman
“yeah ” (grunt)
i called my GP to ask if by handling the vulcans engines (i.e unbolting the generators) i may have exposed myself to the item that Norton Metal detected as radioactive, it was my GP that made the fuss, next thing BNFL are in touch . its not a wind up.
David,
thanks for that. Yes i was worried for my health as i hacksawed through some cables on the olympus engine in order to remove a generator.
the XL391 engines contain thorium, and indeed it is the ALpha rays emmitted from the casings and turbine components that was dedected on the scanner at the recycle plant.
The alpha rays are not dangerous unless INSIDE your body. Over a long period of time, this can cause health problems. The half life is short but its still a serious issue with thorium if it gets inside. It cannot be ‘rubbed’ off , its only if you fragment the metal (i.e in the frag machine !! ) or HACKSAW bits of metal i.e (me ! ) i didn’t however, i just cut a power cable.
Naturally i was concerned and contacted my G.P
my GP in turn contacted the NHS who in turn contacted EPA (envirnonmental protection agency, who , contacted the police, who then contacted British Nuclear Fuels)
the whole assembly of people insisted on seeing myself and all parts i had salvaged. they then proceeded to use geiger counter on me, my cat and the shed.
there was more radiation in a tin of beans.
phew im ok
Vulcan-Love – Is this a wind up or did you really go and see your GP about your Vulcan cockpit trip? The engines is more than likely contain thorium in the castings.
i called my GP to ask if by handling the vulcans engines (i.e unbolting the generators) i may have exposed myself to the item that Norton Metal detected as radioactive, it was my GP that made the fuss, next thing BNFL are in touch . its not a wind up.
British Nuclear Fuels and the police have visited my shed. They gave it a clean bill of health. There are no radioactive components in Vulcan cockpits, but there are in the ENGINES, as in many engines. It is not of any concern and only small amounts. Much more radiation in a microwave or mobile phone.
I also got scanned head to foot ! Im clean , though im contaminated with a love of vulcans.
I was concerned they may take my cache of 391, but nope its safe. (i made an enquiry to my gp about radiation quoting the fact that the engines are quarantined and as a precaution she suggested i get checked, next thing she has phoned EPA and I have a sergeant ringing me informing me he has set up an incident unit to investigate my possible contamination ! uhhhhh!! I only made a few tentative enquires.
there are no radiactive components in vulcans ! its only when you ‘frag’ the engines you have a (neglible) problem.
Nanny state, jobs for boys etc ……..????
FACT – SOuthport beach has had in past DANGEROUS levels of radiation form sellafield and springfield (Preston).
and i live on this beach !
back to VULCAN 391
contact EMR (european Metal Recycling) Liverpool, Alexandra dock branch. Offer to buy the cockpit, its the only way now.
391 are you sure you went to alexandra dock? it’s seaforth that has the dock police, alexandra , is that not open to visit? (im not sure)
John H – the front radar, def has the radiation badge, and im sure its only when active. Im not planning on powereing up the vulcans terrain following radar system !
Interesting link to the health and safety (radiation) issue, seems this topic is already in the news.
Kev,
point taken, the word ‘restriction’ may be better. or hazard.
ok
Pete.
Can you at least grab the PSP sitting units and if possible the central console indicated below please…..? :diablo:
darn.
if only i knew Dave, i could have got those seat items easy, and the panel was almost out.
trying to get number for EMR now
STOP PRESS:
Norton turns away 391 due to certain restrictions
Now being scrapped by EMR recycling Alexandra dock, Liverpool
(Errr, wonder why ive been feeling a bit sick every trip i made to pull out dials)
my terrain radar has re surfaced !
edited this post* PM for details.
What time is she due there? Are you going down?
im going down yes. the prob is they are mega strict in that yard. hard hat and luminous vests . I got a spare vest if you need one. also not sure ill actually be allowed in, but i have a friend who works there. I have contacted him and asked him to take pictures. not sure when the cockpit arrives. tried to ring alastair (scrap) to get time, hes not answering. (prob cuz he owes me cash for bits that have got buried under OLYMPUS engines)
391, i would have thought this is a very sad day for you more than anyone.
whats your connection with the craft?
regards.
pete.
