RE: how to make computer games
In Quake the models eg the player characters, weapons, pickups etc were done in Maya as it is a VERY powerful 3D animation programmed. The levels will be made using the engine.

I will have a look over the weekend for some more.

RE: how to make computer games
Most game developers are broken into various sections. For something like Quake stlye game you may have hte following depatments:
Producer
Artists
3D Modelers
Level Designers
Text Texture Designers
Engine programmers
Testers
and a few more.
3D models tend to be created in something like 3D Studio Max or similar software.
When their mention the “engine” this refers to the graphics engine. Everything you see, from the levels, weapons, players is all part of graphic engine. There are many engines out there but the main ones people use are the Quake engine, Unreal Engine, Lithtec Engine. All very powerful but suit different roles.
Most graphic engines are written in C++ language then they are textured and made to look like the environment for the game.
While games like Age of Empires does not use 3D in the sense of a game like Quake it still uses 3D objects, most of these are simple polgon shapes others are “voxels” a voxel is in esscne a 3D pixel, the dots that make up your screen.
I hope that helps, the best thing to do is search on google for sites that go into how a game is made, it is an interesting subject to read.

RE: Unusual Weather Occurances
The ozone is indeed repairing itself and at its current rate should be repaired withing 40 – 50 years.
The increase in the rain in the Northern Hemisphere is indeed due to more water being turned into water vapour, but its cause is not strictly an increase in fossil fuels etc, the sun is also to blame.
In the records the general temperature of the earth follows a path of activity that closely follows the activities of the suns most active periods, which we are currently experining.
So when the Sun calms down the earth will cool down as well.

RE: The future of civil aviation
A nuclear powered aircraft has already been made in the past. The Russians outfitted one of their bears with nuclear engines, but they found it offered no significant advantages over convential engines.
Granted this was in the 60’s/70’s and our knowledge of nuclear materials has come on along way, so i wouldn’t be suprised if somewhere in a research lab someome is developing a new nuclear powered engine.
Of course the A/C maybe lighter with out fuel tanks etc, but what about radioactive shielding? Perhaps that will be heavier than the fuel making it ineffient??

RE: Computer network question!
GZYL,
I assume you are in the UK and are you using cable or ADSL ?
You will need a switch but get one that is capble of handing your broadband connection, NetGear 114 I belive is a good one, but will need to check on the number for you.
So your setup would look something like this
Broadband Box on your wall -> Modem -> Switch/Hub -> PC’s
With regards to make sure each user gets equal bandwidth, I am not sure that is possible on a cheap budget. There maybe some software that will do that for you, but a hub or switch will set you back a few hundred with bandwidth controls and restrictions on it.

RE: What do you think about this picture?
Lets see if I can shed some light on this problem.
1) The clouds and see look like they were done in a programme called Byrce, it is VERY good for making landscape scenes and sky scens and has a VERY good cloud engine.
2) The runway and the aircraft look as if they were done in 3D Studio Max then combined with the background.
I would also like to know how this is done, if its not using the above method. Maybe one of the 3d modlers from AFM forum could shed some light maybe.

RE: sending out a comp. SOS
coanda,
Try these few things first:
1) Make sure new RAM is seated properly. Make sure clips are secured to the RAM
2) Take your current graphic card out and then put it back in to see if that helped.
3) If that did not work take the 512mb RAM out and put your old stuff back in and see if it works, if it does, your RAM is faulty
If after doing both above and your GFX card fails to work try the next following:
1) Try your GFX card in another PC, if it works then your AGP slot or motherboard maybe damaged.
2) If it does not work in another PC, you GFX could be dead, try another card in your PC to check. If the new one works old one is dead.
3) Buy a new one.
Hope this helps.

RE: A Few Computer Questions
>Also, I can’t seem to get Jane’s F-15 to look good. It seems
>the 3Dfx stuff isn’t turned on or something yet the options
>tell me it is. I don’t really understand what the deal is.
3Dfx were effectivly bought out but nVidia, consquently the nVidia chips do not support 3dfx rendering, hence why your graphics look poor on F-15. The only way around this is to get what is called a “Glide Wrapper” this will enable your graphics chip to render 3dfx graphics and in theory makes it look pretty again. I have done this for Novalogics, F-16, F-22 and MiG-29
What operating system are you using?
Have you got the latest graphic card drivers from nVidia?

RE: Windows XP
Microsoft keep playing silly buggers with the Java VM machine.
Its all to do with their squabbles with Sun Microsystems.
I belive you can still find it in the bowles of the MS download site, if you do need it, i have a copy on my system just let me know.
Alternativly try Suns VM Machine
