    Weather this Sunday

It is looking really good for the display! A good forecast always means a good gate so get here early. Plenty of flying before the display – arrivals, type conversions etc. plus the museum to see of course so every reason to ‘put your towels down early’. I usually have a few passengers waiting patiently for their turn, usually in the Magister.

A message for the freeloaders who plan to peer over the hedge on the approach to runway 21 –

You must be barkin’ mad to watch an air display under the approach to a live runway. Taking the risk yourselves and feeling smug about denying a charitable trust your entrance charge is one thing but what about your kids sitting innocently on your shoulders? If the unthinkable happens it could quite likely happen on your heads. This why there are plenty of little yellow notices on the road side of the fence pointing out the dangers. You simply ignore them or rip them off – an arrestable offence of Criminal Damage.

It costs thousands of pounds to put these displays on. Operating my privately owned aircraft for the benefit of The Collection costs me a fortune too. Whilst I am delighted to join in, it bugs me to see a crowd of freeloaders, especially ‘in harms way’ under my nose on finals. You are a distraction that we can do without. Please pay to come in and see the display or shove off.

    Please…..!!!

    Miles Falcon

Great to see the photographs of the Falcon 6. ‘Tis true that it is the only Falcon 6 extant. My Falcon, like the Australian machine VH-AAT, is a Falcon Major.

I would love to see and hear the 6 cylinder version – it has an impressive performance.

The period scheme does nothing for the beautiful lines of the aircraft.

    Speaking generally….

It is not uncommon for induction fires to occur in old engines, usually as a consequence of a backfire on starting or over-priming.

Thats why all aircraft must carry a fire extinguisher.

When Skysport rebuilt my Miles Falcon they installed some added fire protection in the form of a hefty extinguisher in one of the wing roots, operated by ‘a big red handle’ in the cockpit.

    Old wooden planes burn fiercely.

It seems as though the guys at Duxford did a great job and thus saved an important airframe from destruction.

    Hurrah!

    Model planes

HP reveals his former passion – an ex-Large Model Association Examiner – and will be at Cosford for the LMA show.

My toys have simply grown from 1:3 to 1:1 scale so if anyone wants the smaller ones PM me. I dont fly them any more.

I have never been to Leg Ends but probably should go one of these years.

    Hi Arm Waver

Nice to read that my machines are being appreciated.

Flying these old aircraft is no black art ( I wish I could say the same about the heli I am learning to fly….) but it does require a lot more care.

I reckon that somebody of average ability and with zero tailwheel experience would be ready for solo in the Magister – in ideal weather conditions and with good instruction – within ‘several’ hours only.

A lot of the Shuttleworth pilots – invariably ex-military test pilots – have very few tailwheel hours.

If you think about it, in WW2 kids soloed these things in 10 hours or got chopped. Mind you, there were lots of accidents….

We are running regular features on ‘flying the Shuttleworth machines – a pilots perspective’ – in ‘Propswing’, the SVAS Newsletter.

These features will include privately owned aircraft. I believe the article on my Magister is due to be printed shortly.

    Join the SVAS!

    Check out whttp://www.shuttleworth.org for details.

Half-price admissions on display days, free, I think, on other non-flying days.

    All the best

    Update on Messie Down..

I understand from the owner that an agreement has been reached with an organisation in France to repair the thing. Hurrah!

THere is a lot of expertise in France, as anybody who has had the fortune to visit the Robin factory will testify.

Lets hope that we see OE back in the air soon ( my guess is 3 years min..)

Well in that case, you need to come to the Old Warden Flying Proms on Saturday August 13th where you are likely to see and hear it again!

This is a wonderful event, blessed always by perfect weather(!).

Bring along a ‘proper’ picnic ( you know – all the nice linen and candles, champagne etc.) and enjoy.

Anyway, if you want to know more about the Proms, come and find me at Old Warden today, Sunday for the Summer Air Display.

    Hello!

Hi Kev 35, I’m not sure if we have met.

    Nice images.

I am flattered that you use my Magister in your signature. If it is a machine that really blows your frock up then please come and find me at one of the displays and I’ll let you crawl all over it and photograph it to your hearts content.

Watertight spark plugs? Won’t gas-tight ones do the trick? Like…well…all spark plugs really….

Is this a Storch engine? I’m not that whizzed up on which models fit what.

Al I know is that if you have a potentially airworthy engine then it could be put to its original use for the pleasure of many and be worth a few quid..

It is frustrating when spares are sought for old engines – I have been there – only to draw a blank.

    Whats its history?

Finally, My guess is that without the cowling/ all the cooling baffles you may well overcook the rear cylinders (at least) if you run it for any length of time.

You missed the Moth Club weekend at Old Warden on 11/12 June this year then?

You can get a ride in all sorts of DH products and all in the aid of charity.

Look out for this event in 06.

The other option is – go to Old Warden on a display day ( join the SVAS beforehand so you get in for half price) and buy a few guess the height tickets. I’ll let you into a secret – not many people enter so you stand a good chance of a Tiger or Magister ride after the display.

    Bendix?

    Hi Melvyn,

My Magister and Falcon ( plus the Messenger) use Auster-type Bendix brakes. If properly sorted, these work reliably well.

Gordon Spooner of Messenger G-AJWB fame worked out that the main problem with ( old) Bendix brakes was the electrolytical corrosion between the ally wheel and the steel inner brake rim riveted to it. The ally corrodes, swells and causes high spots in the steel, ruining the contact area = useless brakes. All can be sorted.

Would this arrangement not work for you? It would also give you differential braking on the rudder pedals and you could also get rid of those nasty heel brake pedals, albeit at the expense of installing a non-standard ‘fly-off-type handbrake lever somewhere.

Some Austers have spats – as indeed does my Maggie – so it might be possible on the Cloudster?

If so, I’m sure we can help you with bits – I have several contacts for parts and machining.

The Cessna 150 Cleveland brake mod on my PT22 is absolutely brilliant. I havea crashed 22 with all the brake bits. Shame to break it up though – it could go again. Fancy another project? I’m sure your bank manager has a sense of humour really…..( mine laughs only well I tell him to – a bit different to just a few years back….).

Come and fly the Maggie or 22. I have offered before. I can then show you the arrangement on The Collections Maggie.

    Yes I do……!

    Thanks a lot!

Some excellent photographs and yes I do like the one of my Falcon very much indeed.

It was a difficult day, with a blustery on-crowd wind and some nasty low-level turbulence.

See you at the next display.

    Covers

    Dear Albert,

You are clearly not a pilot.

The extremes of temperatures recently can actualy melt plastic. My Robin has a bubble canopy and I need to be very careful when parking it in the sun.

I was also worried about my old wooden planes baking in the sun at Shuttleworth on Saturday.

A mate of mine didnt cover his machine when we were in France and the (visible) result was 2 trashed headsets. They had actually melted.

The heli bubble is particularly condusive to massive temperatures.

Better to have the thing there and (I’m sure) take the covers off for the toggies as opposed to not pitching up with it.

I’m sure the owner didnt want to cover it but had no choice.

Please dont slag him off for getting in the way of your hobby.

Consul.. you are a friend already!

I am of course very keen to obtain phtographs of my aircraft – especially older ones – so please please please please EMail them to me. Failing that, we have state of the art computer kit here so I can scan and return.

I have pictures of EG’s birthday thank you – did it taste good? It certainly looked very sweet.

I hope you can visit EG in the not too distant future.

In the meantime, I have to relieve you of that car mascot so we need to fix a flight up for you in exchange…..

On the subject of birthdays, EG was built in 36 and then went to Sweden so I plan (again) to take it to Barkaby ( their PFA Rally equivalent) next year to celebrate its 70th.

WW – There is a private event there but certainly nothing to stop Miles Gawpers from visiting visitor-friendly WW. They have a nice restaurant and terrace.

    All the best
