    Avenger

The Avenger is a great machine – I had a pole of THT’s last season.

A big, slow flying truck of a thing.

I agree that they represent incredible value for money and I hope to have more goes in it.

    Owning one though? Nah…

    Now a P40…….Theres a thought.

    Hi All!

    Blimey,

You’r spending my money quicker (ish!) than my ‘ex’ did – God bless her silk socks….

Avenger based at Old Warden? Nah. Its too big. In any event, THT brings his fine machine in throughout the season.

I have my heart set on a Mustang but probably could be persuaded otherwise if something really did blow my frock up big time.

It needs a second seat and needs to fit in the Old Warden hangar/ Old Warden scene.

    Gotta be a 51?!

    Ryan thread

Well, he did it anyway – and its got off to a cracking start!

Anybody who isn’t turned on by these top ‘bang for buck’ chuckle machines needs to go for a lie down.

Would I sell my spares machine (or should I say ‘ship’??) to an American?

Probably yes, especially if there was a trade involved. Somebody over there might have something really special – an STM for example? -and might want to px.

OK OK, I know the Menasco ain’t the ‘boat anchor of an engine’ that the 56 is but the STM sure is a pretty bird and my machines are looked after by the best engineers anywhere.

Dream on…. but then quite a few of them have come true already!!

    Pop pop poppin’ along..!!

    Nice images.

Aren’t the parked machines actually Fairchild Cornell’s??

If they are Ryans then I deserve a kick but, in my defence, my Ryan ‘bible’ is currently wth the engineers.

I need some new ‘pukka’ seat harnesses and some Frantz oil filters for the Kinner R56 fitted to my 22.

    Any leads?

    All the best

The sea shall not have them

    Anybody remember this one?

It involved a Hudson ditching and the crew getting rescued by an Air Sea Rescue launch directly under the Jerry shore batteries.

It was a long time ago and I cant quite remember if it was a genuine machine or a mock-up. However, it looked pretty authentic to me as it slipped beneath the waves.

A friend of my fathers was a diver on the film but he ain’t around to ask now….

    Wotashame….

It brings a tear to your eye?!. But, looking on the brighter side, its only a machine. The skilful forced landing enabled pilot and pax to walk away from it.

It doesn’t look like that now. It has been carefully dismantled including a complete engine strip for preservation.

As can be seen, it can be restored to fly. There is excellent support for these aircraft from the USA. The International Ryan Club is also very active.

The 22 is a great flying machine that is unfortunately not well represented here. We only have mine and another (ex-Breighton) at Duxford in flying condition.

Bob Mitchel has 2 mouldering away in his Cosford ‘mausoleum’ (an apt decripton for a wet, horrible shed containing some rare/ rotting flying machines) but I think thats it.

Anybody know of others in the UK?

Anybody know the current whereabouts of G-BPUD’s owner at the time of its accident? I have some questions for him.

    G-BPUD

    Thats the one.

It was somewhat unusual in that the oft-discarded leg fairings and spats were fitted to it.

Such a pity tha what was once a pristine aircraft is now just a stack of parts, some quite bent….

Still – in those immortal words, ‘if you dont want it bent, don’t fly it.’

I would love to see it fly again and would let it all go for, well.. not a lot really…..

    Great photo!

    Hi MotF!

Yes we can play with it – no problem. It goes like stinko. I’ll show you the sales invoice to prove that some lunatic paid £325k in cash for it from the Scottish Motor Show stand in 89. Hard to imagine that these cars changed hands for a whopping £600k (!) before the market collapsed.

Its worth a fraction of that now and could be yours for a lot less than you might think.

I can just see your name on the logbook?!

We can play with the DB5 too. That ain’t for sale though.

Planes, old cars – all fair weather machinery. I need something exciting to do in the Winter……

Lots of work under way with the vintage aircraft, all 3 will look terrific for the 05 season. Working on another smaller acquisition at the moment. If I told you what it was I’d have to kill you.

    All the best mate.

    Planes on film

I understood that the Beech lost an engine (it stopped, it didn’t fall off..) too when it flew through the billboard.

I thought it was a hoot of a film! Wheres your sense of humour?!

Wasn’t the aerobatic monoplane in WP (the one that crashed and got ‘torched’ by a smoking ghoul) a heavily disguised Chipmunk??

I guess it will have to blow my frock right over my head!

The 22 did it for me sure enough.I owe you a ride in it surely?

Go on, make my day…. again.

    All the best for 05

    Hi Dave H,

‘As exciting as the HP 42’……..

I quite agree but bet that it is just as unlikley.

Skysport Engineering did indeed commence the manufacture of a (the?) replica for a film but, as understand it, like so many films, the funding wasn’t there so the project (ahem….) stalled. The fuselage structure seems to be all there but thats about as far as it got.

It moved to Shuttleworth as an exhibit a few months back – an unlikely move if it was going to be resurrected(?).

If you look at the website inception date, the ‘news’ is a year old.

Anyway, it doesn’t need me to pour cold water on what has always promised to be an exciting project. It wasn’t any fault of Skysport that the client pulled out all those years back.

Maybe the contractor was indeed Hawker Restorations – they simply subbed the job out to Skysport? If so, I believe it wouldn’t be the first time that another company has got the credit for Skysports exquisite work.

    Pick me, Pick me!

As I am unlikely to ever fly a Spitfire I suppose I could volunteer to drive one of the wooden taxing replicas and remember to pull the ‘retract gear/ prop fall-off ‘handle at the right time.

Bar room banter afterwards?? Look, I know I would be right in the cross hairs for a mega @iss-take from the proper pilots but having been insulted by experts over the years I can cope.
