    Webbing

    Hurrah!

I’ll contact Anglia and point them in the right direction.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Harnesses

    Hi all,

    Very helpful thank you!

Stu Hoy of Anglia sailplanes cannot get the webbing. They are the original m/f’s.

Hookers may be an option if we can’t find a set of Z-Types. However, I am gravitating towards Z’s if we decide against Suttons and will put more effort into the search.

Stan – Great to hear from you, and thanks for your very kind offer! Logistics and timescales may be a problem. I wonder if you could share your supplier with Anglia Sailplanes here in the UK, or PM me with their details??

My concern is one of timescales.

I would of course prefer period belts.

    Storch door

The ( single starboard side) door on the wartime Storch opened forwards.

The post-war Morane Saulnier Criquet, the early examples of which were powered by French-built Argus V8 engines, had a Cub-type upward opening door that could be latched to the wing, both on the ground and in flight.

The original door, as seen on my aircraft, has a flare box fitted to it – a complex affair with lots of springs in it. The flare pistol tube can be seen on the port side of the fuselage.

    Hope helps.

    Speeds

    The Storch cruises at 65kts.

It will go a little faster but the fuel burn increases massively for little gain.

Its a mad contraption for sure, but huge fun.

    Storch

Glad you like my aeroplane guys.

It is currently the only one flying in the UK. The Duxford-based machine is undergoing a comprehensive rebuild to its original Argus powered configuration. I look forward to flying in a 2-ship.

Meanwhile, come to Old Warden and see it in action.

Rides are a possibility, speak to me at Old Warden.

    Messie with tundra tyres

I have just swapped Emails with Peter Amos, the Miles guru who is very excited indeed at the image of the Messenger with big wheels. I expect he will visit this forum shortly and explain all. The incident is well documented but previously never thought to have been photographed.

    Great thread!

    Messengers

A great aircraft. I used to own G-AKBO, the aircraft used in the opening sequences of 633 Sq. Great fun to fly and rivaled my Storch in STOL performance, in addition to flying a lot faster on half the gas and carrying (at least) 2 more people.

I also own Falcon G-AEEG and Magister G-AKPF.

‘KBO was until recently stored at Enstone but has now changed hands and is under restoration to fly again.

I will alert Peter Amos, the Miles guru, to this thread. There was a Miles thread here that ran and ran several years ago. I wonder if it could be linked?

    PT22

    Hi Melvyn.

I gave away a crashed PT22 via Paul Ford – Sywell based with DR1 replica, contactable via Mat Boddington if not direct. He will know where it went.

Cathy Silk has a very nice project for sale – needs an engine ( can help there).

FOr all things technical on PT22’s, contact the oracle, Bob Wilson –

    bobwil48917 which is at sbcglobal.net

Alternatively, bring your measuring tape and camera on Sunday to Old Warden.

    Hope helps

    Ignition switch needed

    Hi all,

I posted a request on this thread a while back – no luck.

I spotted a very nice German panel on the thread and this had a rotary magneto switch ie as opposed to the more common/ later vertical type with a removable ‘key’ on a chain.

We seek one of these rotary switches for a flying 1937 FW Stielglitz.

    All help appreciated.

    G-CUBP

As you say, the history of the aircraft here, incl. the current owner. Unusually, there is no photo.

    http://www.caa.co.uk/application.aspx?catid=60&pagetype=65&appid=1&mode=detailnosummary&fullregmark=CUBP

It was based at Shotteswell, Banbury by Paul Grenet until about 5 years ago. It was then in pristine, new condition in classic yellow. He might have an old photo? Check out the previous owner file and write some letters?

    Hope helps

    Miles

Glad you liked my Miles machine. Its a honey.

Its a Falcon BTW, not a Witney Straight. The newly restored gem of a Witney Straight ( not sure about the modern paint finish, modern brakes and non-standard electric flaps etc…) at Turweston is nothing to do with me.

The Witney Straight is effectively the same machine as my Magister, but with a side by side 2-seater fuz and a Falcon tail fin/ rudder.

The Falcon is a 3 seater – again pretty much sharing the same wing and tail as the Falcon/ Maggie but with trousered undercarriage and simple sprung U/C as opposed to the spatted wheels/ Airdraulic oleos of the WS and Maggie.

The Falcon is a much prettier machine IMO – but then I could be accused of bias…!!

2 or 3 of those and I’ll agree to anything.

    Prentice

IMO the Prentice is a clear example of what was wrong with the Air Ministry at the time. The result is a multi role disaster that gets airborne due only to the curvature of the earth and flies as badly as it looks ( I have spoken to several pilots who have flown one).

This will be an expensive aircraft to maintain and operate, especially on the UK Register. Very much a case of ‘take out your wallet and repeat after me – help yourself’.. Far better to throw the same sort of money at something much nicer.

On the basis that it couldn’t be worse, the challenge to find a better aircraft for the same money/ much smaller operating pot wont be difficult…..

Corrosion can be a big problem in this large and complex airframe, requiring painstaking and expensive inspections. Restoration will involve no less work than a Spitfire and with only a fraction of the return. If it aint ‘been done’ then I would be very sceptical indeed about any ‘corrosion-free’ claims.

Sorry, but its a dog. Nuff said.

    Falcon

    Hi Adrian. Hi RPS.

The Falcon spent the Winter 06/07 in Stockholm. I have no immediate plans to fly it back to Sweden again before its 75th birthday in 2011.

We are preparing to move the aircraft to Leicester – I’m at the top of the hangar list now ( its taken me a while…) and we will enjoy it there. I am a very keen member of Leicester Aero Club.

Lucky? I am a firm believer in the fact that, barring a lottery win, you make your own luck in this life. It wasnt many years ago that I was initially turned down for a £5k bank loan – they finally relented but only after they put a second charge on my house…..

I then endured five years of sleepless nights. During the working day in my new business we dreaded the phone ringing because it was more likely to be a creditor or a complaint rather than an order.

You get one shot at this life. I have taken many risks, some say bordering on the foolhardy. However, I eventually got something right….

If thats luck then I am indeed lucky. It depends on your interpretation of the word.

    All the best
