Oscar Duck – a shot from the hip –

Nobody in their right mind would expect an unsolicited approach from a photographer saying, ‘thanks very much, I’ve just taken a photo of your aeroplane, here’s a tenner’.

Far better in my experience to afford photographers every courtesy, understand that what they might make from the occasional sale is likely at best to make a contribution only to their costs and hope that they might take the trouble to let you have a copy.

Every photographer mentioned in this thread is well known to me. I have taken them all flying, offered my machines as camera ships etc. – all at zero cost. The net result is a circle of good blokes – wags all – and a very nice collection of superb images to pore over long after I have hung up my goggles.

Chill on this one. There will be a net benefit to you. You might be able to fly a plane, you might be able to point a camera. However, you cant take one of you in your bird. Also, the skills of these guys confine a ‘good’ snap to the dustbin. Get yourself a collection of Blacow, Burkes, Knox etc. etc. and you’ve done very well indeed.

I cant wait to see some shots of the DR1’s first flight but I can guess who’ll be there at the crack of sparrows….. 😉

    All the best

    Fast cars

The thread began with fast cars…I got rid of my Aston when I got too nervous ( and dare i say responsible??) about the zero crash protection. It went for a motorhome for Nickys kids. However, she got fed up with posh camping quite quickly. For those who know the lovely Nicky, she is definately a high maintenance 5 star hotel model. I suggested proper canvas camping once…..( only once).

We seem to be inventing more and more uses for the R44 – unlike my Robin Regent, which I am sure(?!) would sit happily at 5280ft on autopilot – the 44 is better suited to heli shopping and lunches.

    Jackaroo

    Blimey,

No wonder so many of them were ‘re-converted’ back to the boggo Tiger!

What a wierd machine. I bet its not too pleasant to fly either? Don’t get me wrong, if somebody wants to put me in the left hand front (or left hand rear?!) seat thats just dandy by me. I promise to tell lies about it if it really is a dog…..

Thruxton Jackaroo – Tiger Moth with sidecar!

IR was the subject of an in-depth feature in one of the mags, I think it was Pilot a few years back.

    Nature isn’t always kind…

It was me, it was me! I was going in to buy a tube of balsa cement…er….for somebody else.

Not really….20 years ago and I was still a cop fighting with drunks in Gravesend Kent ( or at least as a Sergeant my blokes were…) My car at the time would have been a fifty quid wreck – I used to do them up on the side to supplement our awful pay.

I bumped into my ex wife last year (I would have been married for 34 years this year if I hadn’t got divorced after 4…..)

    Aaaaaargh!

She was a doll as a teenager and not bad when a saw her last about 20 years ago but..oh dear….Fat as a barrel, rotten teeth and grey roots. Frightened the life out me when I saw a face I recognised on someby elses jowls and on top of all that waddling lard.

Porsches? Never driven one. Still tearful about flogging my beautiful DB5 after 25 years of ownership last year but an expanding collection of flying machines is taking my mind off it.

Take my advice Janie 😉 ….cherish the memory and do nothing more with it. I’m not saying that us older blokes aren’t worth a look…I still managed to pull the gorgeous Nicky and she’s 12 years younger. Phooooaaaar!….

    I’ll get my coat……

    OOS Registrations

    Out of sequence registrations

Don’t let the huge cost of ‘special’ car registrations – often silly and invariably illegaly spaced – fool you into thinking that an OOS aircraft registration will cost big bucks.

Provided it has never been used before, and isnt offensive, the CAA will let you have it with pleasure for the grand sum of £160 on top of the usual registration fee.

Many civil aircraft registrations relate to the business of the company that owns the thing.

I have 2 OOS registrations that do just that for mine.

A pity that they cannot ever be transferred under the current CAA ruling.

    Fury Replica

This is at best a full scale look-alike but with a RR Kestrel.

Cant we persuade the owners – who I believe dont fly it – to pass on the engine?

We have been waiting with baited breath for years now to see the gorgeous Skysport Demon in the air. It looked all there when featured a few months back in Aeroplane.

Pity you need so much muscle ( or a Hucks of course!) to wind the thing up. I can just imagine turning up at G-VFWE in something like that otherwise….

    Agelis 330

    A nice inexpensive idea.

    Buuuuuut…..

Those dinky little skids were designed for a vertical landing on a U Boat at speed.

I cant imagine anyone wanting to operate it from a moving truck……..?!

Anybody got Brendan O Brien’s phone number??

    More thoughts..

The Q6 is of interest. Give me the owners details please.

Another possibility is a Nieuport 28. Wouldn’t that be cool?! A howling banshee of a thing. If we can find an engine we could be on for it.

    Hi DB,

Is that the ex-Rex Ford machine? Rumour has it that it sold for a mere £70k. It was offered to me a couple of years earlier for £170k.

If so, it is for sale on G A Buyer.

Unusually, it has VP props which I guess are scarce these days…? Certainly, thats the impression i got when I looked at it initially.

I didnt have the akkers then…

    Resin model

Looks like a Miles Hawk to me, the pre-war version of the Magister. MMMMmmm.

I found a resin model of the Falcon in Sweden. In fact, a resin model of my actual aircraft in Swedish WW2 military colours.

    Magister, Falcon

Check out http://www.Shuttleworth.org for display dates, let me know when you are coming and I’ll arrange to meet you – no problem to crawl over my aircraft. The best time would be during the morning of an evening display.

A lot of stuff is already out there on my aircraft – an hour on the Net will provide you with some good basic information.

A model of the Falcon – 1 x 6th scale I think, was featured recently in RC Model World. I’m looking forward to seeing that fly – the plan is very accurate too.

    An interesting debate..

Given a continuing fair wind I would love to build up a collection of old flying machines over the next few years/ into my retirement and am certainly open to suggestions.

Whilst we are currently talking about the Antoinette and DV11, a DH2 would also be near to the top of the list. Wouldn’t that be fun?!

It might even be possible for me to employ my own team of engineers and set them going on 2 or 3 projects at once. Whilst we have a fantastic skill base here in the UK it will become very expensive though, with labour rates as they are, to award contracts to British firms.

A mate of mine is having some work done in Eastern Europe. The quality and speed of the job is impressive, the cost – amazing.

With labour the main cost of these things we are in danger of losing out more and more to foreign companies.

Another friend of a friend had a Zlin overhauled in Eastern Europe. It was comletely zero timed and was effectively a factory-fresh machine. The work was bang on the quote at a mere £26k, engine, new spar, the lot. It was a stunningly good job. I would guess that the same job here would have run into 6 figures.

Anyway….please let me know whats out there, what could be bought and who could do it. If I employ my own engineers and don’t need to make a profit, we stand a good chance of keeping the work here.
