The OSF with its laser range finder or the spectra if there are some radar emissions will take care of that.
The Mica IR (or EM) can be fired well before usual WVR dogfight range even without radar thanks to other passive/active sensors available.

So the distinction between BVR and WVR is quite “artificial is the case of the rafale” diminishing the need of an HMS on top of the fact tha the AdA don’t anticipate threats that would require a HMS. If there is a need it could be integrated quite quickly as the rafale was already tested with an HMS.

would you like to explain to me how the mica ir is controlled and targeted by the osf/laser for ‘passive’ bvr ?
as well as when planes have a laser warning ?

also by your post, you are saying that wvr the HUD is sufficient againts the ef and latest us hms and weapons
something i disagree with

do you have a link to where the hms was successfully tested/fitted on the rafale ?

i didnt hear about the irmaws upgrade, that will be good too and i agree the upgrades will go ahead, with the 9t engine and hms probably dependant on exports, although the air intake will take a 8.3 now, i think i read
so there is also a signed order contract for the upgrades or a MOU funding development and intentention to order ?
not that it really matters, it was just splitting hairs

like the f-22, i think there are some barriers to overcome fitting the mhs, if there wasnt the hms would of been fitted as previously planned
fr doesnt want to partner the fitting, so uae or brazil will own the IP for fitting the hms ?

yes the aesa is in test for the fleet, osf-it and an engine upgrade requirering inlet redesign for 9 ton, but “are already funded and ordered” i havent seen this stated
so the hms was initially required by fr and postponed. when exports get hms, fr wont put on own fleet, i wouldnt put money on that

mica ir 50-60k, i dont think so, nor does the topic on airdefence, the rf is

It needs a booster to take it up to Mach 4, so it’s more aimed at taking payloads up to low orbit, tho it could possibly be used as a cruise missile launched from a B-52, but the military use as such is questionable.

medium to long range a2a, ru is also developing scram

which upgrades ? Most of them (AESA, OSF-it, new engines…) are already funded and ordered. Delivery starting late 2011 for the french air force.

As for the HMS there is no urgent need and is not absolutely neccessary as the MICA IR can be fired well before any conventional IR missile coupled with HMS.

thats news to me, i havent seen any funding approved yet
i’ve seen quotes where the fr pilots want the hms and countries wont order unless rafale has it
mica ir bvr ? sorry the ru/usa mrm has already taken you out in bvr

just to be serious for a bit, yes, i have said a couple of sales will give the money to do the upgrades and it looks like brazil and uae will buy

its not in trouble but look deeper, i have heard there are development problems, anyway it will deploy mid this decade, i cant see the waverider doing that
lets project to about 2020 when both should be running
