How’s the Vulcan repaint coming along? It hasn’t really been a summer for painting outdoors so I can’t imagine that has helped matters!
Quite slow Steve but thats due to the weather and other work which has been carried out on her, the underside has had about 50% painted in white – which looks excellent! Best of checking the Avro Vulcan XL319 thread here: http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=96975
Tom, i cant remember, regarding the Canberra, did i send the close up images of the decals to yourself/Paul ? its all of the exterior ones that are required for if she gets a re paint, if not, i still have them at home, if you can PM me should you need them
Didn’t send them to me, I believe we already have images & position of all the decals so they shouldn’t be needed. Thanks but no thanks.

Past Events!
Falklands War Commemoration (June 2012)
Over 2nd – 3rd of June the museum held a ceremonial weekend to mark the 30-year anniversary of the Falklands conflict. The conflict had began on Friday 2nd April 1982 when Argentine forces invaded and occupied the Falkland Islands and South Georgia. It lasted 74 days and ended with the Argentine surrender on 14th June 1982 returning the islands to British control.
The museum had on show a number of exhibits which had an association with the conflict including our Vulcan bomber, the type made famous for its Black Buck missions from the Ascension Islands to bomb the runways at Port Stanley airfield and our combat veteran Argentine Pucara.
Crosses were laid on Sunday 3rd June at 11:00 to remember those who lost their lives.

Sci-Fi Event (June 2012)
This year the museum was invaded by multiple types of characters from Doctor Who and Star Wars. As well as the popular TV and Film Characters, the Museum staff also played a part in this years event, dressing up as aliens and Area 51 Personnel, performing autopsys throughout the day. A Shooting Range was also in operation behind the Vulcan Bomber and both activities proved to be a big hit with visitors, especially children.
Visitors were also involved in a Star Wars firefight which involved two teams trying to suppress and eventually defeat the opposing force with laser designated weapons. There was also a chance for people to be part of the Space Shuttle Discovery’s Last Flight, by climbing into our ‘Space Simulator’ and witnessing the final take off and journey through space.
The ever-popular Vulcan cockpit was also open allowing the public to climb up and see what life was like for the V-Bomber Crew. Other Aircraft open includes the De Havilland Vampire, Hawker Hunter and Gloster Meteor.

On the 16th and 17th June, Sunderlands Aviation Museum will be transformed into a Roswell style crash site, making it a truly out of this world and unique experience for all ages.
Upon arrival at the museum, visitors will be greeted with a still-smoldering saucer, most of the occupants are deceased however it will be your job to find the rogue aliens – One of which will be watching your every move, instantly beaming it back to the mother ship. Visitors will be issued an Area 51 Pass which will allow them to get up close and personal with the crash site, 1950’s Military Police will take care of checking your ID and allowing you on site.
You’ll have to pass through the de-contamination tent before and after you leave the site but be sure not to get mixed up with the autopsy tent or you may have a bit of an un-welcome surprise!
Following the success of last years Sci-Fi / Fathers Day event, this year will be bigger and better, including Competitions, Raffles, Tombola’s, Toy and T-Shirt Stalls, a Bar (provided by Party Bar UK) and Music, BBQ and Military Vehicles, Cockpit Access, plenty of photo opportunities and much more!
Visitors of all ages are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Sci-Fi character, a Childrens Fancy Dress Competition will be held on Sunday at 2pm.

April Update
Apologies for the lack of updates over the past few months.
A lot of work has been carried out over the past few months at NEAM…
Westland Gazelle, G-BAGJ
The Gazelle has had another paint job. This time into British Army Colours. The aircraft will be on display outside at our Falklands War Commemoration weekend on the 2nd & 3rd June.
Canberra WJ639
Two students from Newcastle College’s Aviation Academy have been working on the Canberra over the past two month. They have been working inside the cockpit to repair the floor / matting which has deteriorated over the years. They are also planning to restore the cockpit back to its original condition which means the Panels & Seating will be getting an overhaul.

Avro Vulcan B.2, XL319
Work has been continuing on the Vulcan over the past few months.
Over the winter period the team squeezed into the bomb bay and under the saddle tank. The tank was then detached and moved further back so the crew could get to the air brake system at the front of the bomb bay. The team managed to deploy them for the first time in 26 years – last deployed in 1986!
The team have also been working inside the cockpit restoring and testing the old systems. – It’s quite suprising the amount that still works.
Once the weather picked up a little, the team continued with the priming and painting of the outside.

Would you like to become a Volunteer at the North East Aircraft Museum?

Thats it for now folks, hope you all had a good Christmas, New Year & Easter!
How’s the new building doing now? The guys were fitting the far end wall on my last visit. It can’t be far away from having the exhibits move in?
I believe they have nearly completed the back and the front is being done now, they have one door on the front and back.
I would say at least another couple of weeks before it’s finished although work is progressing fast!
The Museum will be closed to Public from Friday 23rd December and will re-open January 3rd, 2012.
Look’s like there was a problem on the website… Neam’s Bell 47 has 2 fuel tanks, this would indicate that it is a model G, rather than a D which only has the one fuel tank.
The website say’s its a D though.
That makes is easier…
Pretty much as I described on the earlier post. Also there was a large star & bar on bottom of the cabin with the star point pointing forward, rotor blade tips should be either green or red (for blade tracking) with a wider yellow band inboard.
Tail rotor should be from the tip 6″ red, 6″ white,6″ red, then black with another 6″ at the hub.
Fuel tank caps shuld be red, as should the tail rotor guard (though some are yellow ithe red bands)For details on the “danger keep away” detail on fin, see the Corgi 1/48th model which has a representative color scheme (though the tail rotor guard is red/white as are the TR blades).
Interior sides of the cabin are the exterior cabin color, with grey floors and console sides. The facing of the panel would be black.
Here’s a link to a recent discussion on the Scale Rotors website. Someone posted some period B&W photos of D/Es undergoing armament trials, but you’ll get a good idea of the cabin colors.
BTW: the only external difference between a H-13D and E is the E had dual controls and three seats.
Again, if you’re doing if for a museum, let send me a PM and I’ll send you the email address for the curator at the Army Aviation Museum. He should be able to provide paint details from manuals.
If you’re going to do it, might as well do it right.
Thank’s for the reply(s) J, but it seems we have a G! 😎
No it isn’t. Its an H-13… a Sioux. Look at the curved lower portion of the fuselage which projects into the bubble, the large twin fuel tanks, the stabiliser on the tail boom, and the fully documented history of XT148.
A good comparison of the differences are here: http://www.bell47helicopterassociation.org/Bell%20article_1_Rev.%20210.pdf
The H model appears to have been the same as the G model, but manufactured under licence by Westlands.Welcome to the lion’s den Tom… 😀
Aha! It seem’s that your correct… Think It’s time we got the website updated then lol.
Yeah, I can clearly see the differences on that pdf…
But on saying that… where has G-ASOL gone?!?! 🙁
Thomas.
Thanks for the reply!
It’s a Bell 47 D.
Thomas.

September Update
Hello,
Quick update of what’s been going on the past couple of weeks at NEAM…

Avro Vulcan B.2, XL319
Work has been continuing on the Vulcan over the past couple of weeks, the team have made good progress and are now getting to the end of the first wing.

De Havilland Dove Mk.8, G-ARHX
The Dove has been stripped of it’s carpet and seat’s, preperations are underway to make it watertight so that it can be moved outside. Most of the windows have been fitted and the exterior cleaned.

De Havilland Comet 4C, G-BEEX/SU-ALM
Some progress has been made on the Comet, mainly the panels have been stripped of their gauges and re-sprayed. Work on repairing and renewing the galley has also been started.

Plan is to turn the Comet into a full functional flight simulator.
Heritage Weekend & Classic Car’s
Last weekend’s Heritage weekend our museum was open for free, during that time we had quite a few visitors attend which resulted in a rise in donations for the Vulcan and in general.
We also had a Classic Car Group attend, they brought a wide range of vehicles dating as far back as the Morris 10!
Visitors said they enjoyed the day and would be coming back in the future.
All in all it was a good weekend, we had the Lightning, Canberra, Whirlwind and Vulcan open.
That’s it for now, another update will be posted in the next couple of weeks.
Thanks,
Thomas.
