Hi Skyliner
Basically, a decision to go-around can be made at any time during an approach to land, it could be an ATC instruction or one the PIC has made himself, if theres anything about the approach you dont like then a go-around is initiated and the earlier this is done the better.
To answer your question I will give you an example of a late go-around, I was on approach into Leciestershire Airfield in a Warrior, it was rather gusty, winds ranging from 14-18kts but only 10-20 deg off runway heading but there was small evidence of windshear so I kept my speed up slightly and only 2 stages of flap, the approach was good, the plane was bumping around a hell of a lot but the warrior has good directional stability so you let the plane ride the bumps, I crossed the threshold then seem to lose alot of airspeed in an instance (windshear), the plane sunk pretty quickly and I didnt have sufficient time to add power and the plane hit the runway quite hard and bounced, i added a small bit of power and tried to settle her on the runway again but she bounced again so instead of trying to settle her on the runway I “went around” and I was only about 10ft off the runway surface, basically in the go around its full power, level the nose, wait for airspeed to build then we raise the drag flap away (In my case I had no drag flap deployed), then a gentle climb and wait for positive rate then the next stage away and so on until the aircraft is “clean”.
So as you can see by doing it like this there is no real way of a tail strike on the runway, and as the planes are quite short in length you would have to raise the nose at a pretty steep angle to strike the tail and in which case in the landing configuraton this would probably send you into a stall.
Hope this has covered a couple of your questions ok, if not fire away with some more 🙂

Very nice Moggy
What altitude/FL was that?

End of the day a CPL with Multi IR MCC JOT and jet TR etc is the same qualification for a man as well as a woman, to obtain this is the same training for a man as well as a woman, it wouldn’t bother me one dot if whenever I fly the pilots were women, and as already has been stated EZY have a vast number of women pilots, when I fly out of Bristol Intl in my Warrior you hear the EZY 737 women pilots on frequency all the time, best of luck to them 🙂

Again
This boils down to moderation, the images in the sigs are pretty much ok but there should be a limit to the size of images i.e no images bigger than say 100 x 40 (example only), and probably a limit on the number of lines that a sig should include.
But I guess its down to us all to try and guage what we think is unreasonable and alter our sigs accordingly 🙂 just remember for every 5 of you on ADSL or Broadband there are probably 2 people on dial-up 🙂

Sounds like you had fun Martin, when you next pop into Bristol Intl again give me a shout, maybe we could have lunch in the terminal and I can show you around the Flying Centre we have there (no this isnt a chat up LOL :D)
and absolutely Ian
Theres too many people who think things will just fall into their laps, Im one who thinks like you in the fact that it is I who has to go to the work, the work wont come to me, and if that means I have to relocate 200/400 miles away then so be it, I went to the Stapleford and Astraeus seminar last Saturday and was determined to speak to the representative of Astraeus afterwards, (Chief training pilot and owner) he gave me and 3 others 25 minutes of his time which was really nice of him and we gained alot from this conversation etc, its definately worth getting to know these people in the right places.

Quite stunning pics Ren, she is a beaut, what equipment do you use?

p.s. unlike Bren I dont want paying 😉
just “report” it 😉 then he gets to see it 😀
or better still send him a PM directing him/her here
Bren
The PPL GST includes a navigation exercise which includes 2 legs, on the second leg you will be given an unplanned diversion, mine included a diversion across a MATZ, then you move on to general handling which includes medium level turns, steep turns, slow flight, PFLs and an EFATO on one of the PFLs, then stalls in clean configuration and flap stalls and stalls when turning onto base leg/final etc, my instructor then took me into IMC and I had to do a 180 deg turn on instruments at standard rate turn to exit IMC (he may not take you into IMC but there was some nice cloud about on mine) then he got me to track BRECON VOR for 5-10 minutes on a certain radial and then home for a couple of circuits, glide approach, flapless etc, and all through this he was asking me technical questions about the aircraft so make sure you read up and understand the POH 😉
Good luck mate
Dean.
yes I must agree that Virgin 744 is one sweet bird 🙂

Auster Fan
Im sure to be part of a syndicate you need 100hrs in your log book for insurance purposes

Same as EAL_KING my nearest is Bristol, although EZY fly alot of 737s from there, there are alot of 757s too and also Embraer 145s and 320s, I would say the 737 movements just tip the rest.
Also there are alot of seneca movements from my flying club based there 😉

That certainly is a cheap rate per hr Moggy, shame you arnt closer to me but there ya go 🙂
Well done Yak.
CAA took 10-11 weeks to send my licence through hehe but then I did pass it in peek time, you shouldnt have to wait no more than 4 weeks provided your paperwork was in order etc 😉
Dean.
its dependant on age
I cant remember the exact ages without looking it up (alarm set downstairs now so will clarify in the morning) but its something like up to the age of 30 its every 5 years, from 30-40 its every 3 yrs, from 40-50 its 2 years and 50+ its every year
If someone knows any different before I can look it up feel free to correct me 🙂
