Is it worth the stress !!!
No, I’d rather walk.
This thread is over 9 years old. Sorry but closed
Gatwick has got so much better since BAA was forced to sell it a few years ago.
That opinion depends on which side of the fence you sit.
Me neither mate, there’s no way it was going to survive anyway, it was stuck in the flap tracks, it was probably crushed on approach even if it had survived the flight. Yes she’s quite a performer, we get the best TAS at FL180 because we can accelerate to 275kts (Vmo -10), but nothing compared to the 727 hey mate? 😉
Ralf, you’re right, the Dash 8 won’t fly at 30,000ft because there is no drop down oxygen. It is capped at 25,000ft for this reason (it needs to reach 14,000ft within 4 minutes). Also that’s a Dash 8-300 isn’t it? They have a normal operating speed at FL250 of about 215kts so that’s roughly 310kts True Airspeed at that level (dependent on temperature), which in turn is about 360mph still air.
The Q400 on the other hand will cruise at about 240kts IAS at FL250, which is about 360kts True Airspeed, which is about 414mph still air. 🙂
Amazing, it definitely looked alot smaller last night, it must be deceiving.
totty I think that’s right, they are alot smaller than you would first suspect. definitely smaller than a 767, and yes I’d say you’re right about them looking broadly similar in size to a 757 apart from a bit fatter.
Nice set of pics.
I taxied past the LOT 787 in Brussels last night, I saw an odd shaped aircraft (odd as in, not the usual) parked behind another one on stand and it was only when I got close did I realise it was the 787, it was too late to boot my phone up and grab a pic, shame as it looked stunning, and surprisingly small.
Really? As I recall the old 747s used to come in around 7-8am and depart again around 11 am. That changed with the introduction of the A380.
Um, I don’t think any of their flights used to come in around 7-8am, I have used Qantas every 2 years for the last 15 years and not once did I ever come in that late in the morning.
EDIT: Perhaps I should use something a little more official as my source. It’s also beginning to look like the early arrivals and late departures are something recently introduced (after the A380 was introduced).
Qantas flight 32 (LHR-SIN-SYD) had it’s engine explode at 10:01 am Singapore time on 4 November 2010.
And nope, that is not correct again, the Qantas services I used from LHR used to depart after 21:30. Even last year they were departing this late in the evening, and even last year they were arriving before 6am.
The exception to this was always about a midday rotation, which has existed for years, and which I have also used before. It’s only recently (this year) that it has been moved forward to 11am.
It certainly wasn’t a late evening departure, which is what they have at present.

Yes it has been a late evening departure, see above, I’ve used it several times.
And to use another youtube video, sorry, does this look like a 9/10 pm departure to you? :p
Don’t think there’s any need to be condescending, do you? 🙂
I don’t really see what the issue is here, or what’s different to what Qantas have done for the last 15 years. I have used Qantas on several occasions to travel to Australia in that time and the schedule has remained pretty much unchanged and stable for that period.
Matt, what do you mean when you say “16hrs isn’t enough”? Do you mean it is enough?
CASA’s flight time limitations are broadly similar to EASA’s but are slightly more limiting when it comes to longer duties, and in particular, those duties that cross different time zones. Flying the SIN-LHR route would constitute a time free of duty in excess of 17 hours. It’s not whether “12hrs” is enough, but whether they are legal to fly according to CASA’s regulations.
I didn’t say a law is subjective, but opinions and thoughts as to whether we agree with them or not is.
I don’t want us to be a dictatorship either, but there is a balance to be had. I agree with Jim’s sentiments entirely about how easy it is for immigrants to swan in over here and claim everything going whilst the indigenous population cannot get half of what is given away to these immigrants. Anyway, if I get started I fear I won’t stop, so I’ll stop there.

right by whome, Kev? Where is this master rule book that every country should adhere to? I’m afraid it does make it right, it makes it right by their laws because it is them who sets them. The real issue is whether you, or we actually agree with them, and that’s where it’s subjective.

Great photos Andrew, from a different viewpoint/angle as well. I have been operating into LGW for a few years now and it’s good to get the low-down on some of the “static” aircraft that we taxi past every time.
