Cheapskate! Only joking, enjoy. And I hope against the odds you get a large Delta-winged surprise tomorrow or friday… 🙂
It’s more about the quality of the time, rather than the money. Although I miss out on the hangar displays (which are very good) and the traders (modelling ones for me), I can do without the massive crowds, poorly sited buger vans, funfair etc. And with 3 people going, it’s prohibitively expensive. It’s cheaper for me to go on all 3 days then to go on a single show day.
I am lucky though, I am only an hour or so drive from Waddington, so going 3 times is not such an issue.
2 years ago I stayed behind into the early evening awaiting the arrival of the Vulcan. The reward: a full display (for CAA approval most likely). And the chance to get photos of one Vulcan flying over the top of another one. Absolutely superb, and well worth the wait.
Incidentally, I was displaying as part of my model club at Coventry museum on Sunday, and got my 3rd chance to actually climb inside a vulcan. Being inside one makes you really appreciate the skill required to display and operate such a large aircraft with restricted visibility.

Enough negativity
Hi guys,
I’m looking forward to this years Waddington, as I do every year. I don’t bother with the show days any more (too much traffic, too expensive), but I book 3 days off work to go to the arrivals and departures days. Far cheaper, much better photography opportunities and no fairground and commentator noise.
As for the Vulcan, I’ve been blessed to be there when she arrived for the last 2 years. I feel sorry for those who paid to go on the show days and be disappointed that she did not fly, but it happens. I’ve also been lucky enough to see XH558 at Lowestoft and Sunderland last year. In fact, I’ve seen it fly at every airshow I’ve attended in the last 2 years with the exception of Shuttleworth.
Given the current climate, I think the show organisers have done a magnificent job. They were unlucky with the Australian F-111, and the RNZAF having other commitments (and probably the vulcan too). but the rest is superb. Yes, there could always be more (raptors would be nice as per RIAT), but I’m not disappointed in the line-up one bit.
Got my sun cream and sun shades ready for tomorrow morning.
Hope to see some of you there,
Steve
Spent shells in an aircraft that crashed on take-off sounds a bit dubious.
Blown cases perhaps, from a post-crash fire?
Moggy
Quite correct Moggy, that’s exactly what I was meaning 🙂
B-17 42-39977
Hi everyone,
Many years ago I was part of the Norwich Aviation Society (now sadly defunct), and we recovered a few parts of a Deopham Green B-17 (42-39977 iirc). It was rather unlucky on the day it was lost, as it crashed shortly after take-off next to the A11. Sadly, all the crew perished. Somewhere I have copies of the official reports.
The landowner at the time kindly let us go and dig. Sadly I have no photographs of the relics, which amounted to a few box fulls… mostly spent cartridges from the surface and heavily melted/corroded parts from underground.
Many years later I was able to return to the field, as by some miracle the land was sold to the father of a friend I was at school with. Unfortunately, I was not able to locate any more relics.
Maybe if I had had a better metal detector, I could have found more. I am pretty certain there is more to be had. If he still owns the land I am pretty sure I could arrange a return trip 🙂

OOps – wrong date
Silly me, I see that’s a date in September! Hope to get to that one.
Still looking forward to tomorrow though (weather permitting)
See you all there tomorrow (weather permitting)
I’m planning to be there tomorrow. However, will wait and do a weather check as some strong winds are currently predicted….. not good for the old aeroplanes.
Fingers crossed the wind drops,
Steve
I saw these too
Hi,
I got copies of both books too – a bargain price.

Airborne over Peterborough
I was lucky enough to see her twice airborne over Peterborough this afternoon. About 3:15 over Castor and and 4:15 at Parnwell. What brought her over here? Thought she was going to Cosford and Brize.
Steve
Why wasn’t you at work steve instead of skiving off.
See you sunday
Time off for good behaviour 🙂
See you Sunday
Steve
Saw her display at Waddington 🙂
558’s display at Waddington more than made up for the non-arrival of the B-52.
Got some pics, some video (hopefully) and had a great day.
Nice to see the bombay doors still functioning.
Would post a pic, but not sure how.
Well done to the team.
Steve
thanks
Thanks Roger,
I’d love to see the photo’s of the unveiling. I have some photo’s I took at MAM, although I am at work so not available to me at the moment, so I know the airframe now…. I assume it is the one hanging up facing the upper level.
Many thanks,
Steve
Local to me then!
Hi,
Not sure where in Peterborough any vintage restorations take place! And I live here (well, just outside).
Is this aeroplane going to be kept here in Peterborough, or is it destined to en up somewhere else?
I’d certainly be interested in a look around the project, if the new owner is willing.
Many thanks,
Steve
Not quite the chase but…..
This was the only shot I got of both planes in the same shot.

Pic
Hopefully I managed to postthe pic this time 🙂
WK163 at Waddington
Hi all,
I was at Waddington watching the arrivals, so got some pics.
