Well offcourse the executing imperatives to US constitution were dictated by the current situation and home made needs, but it did reflect the classical education that you mentioned, and therefore, it was a reflection of the cultural basis that the new world has.
Then you mention the churhces. Of course their power has declined, but once they were so big factor in whole western culture that their mark will eamin upon the ‘west’ for centuryes to come. Wheter the chruch’s status among the state migth wary, its quite noticaple that majority of the immigrants that formed the US population were christians, thougth in multible of different variations, but still christians, and therefore shared some sort of uniform value basis that helped the US culture to form…

Cultures do change, constantly…in fact it cannot stay static by its nature, but its intresting to note that what has been, remains for incredibly long periods, and all culutres has traces of what once was. Cultures move along hegemonyes and more adjusting one whit its tabu’s usually swallows some whit tighter and stiffer mechanism.

Eq Here in finland, I could easily trace our cultural heritage from western Rome’s catholic church and corresponding cultural elements, echoes of Viking era Scandinavia, protestant puritanism, bysantian byrocracy and shades of the east and past Mongol occupation and most importantly (to me) a hint of those Uralian people that rambled on along eastern and northern europe, before the Indo-europeans, their deeply rooted national spirit, a distant beating of shaman’s drum…

well but not a single civilication can claim a truely homogenious culture. By its nature cultures are mixatures of different spheres of infleunce, and western culutere isent acception. But looking from other way around, you cannot divide western culuture clearly to different sections, that would be so different than the neighbouring one…There are differences, but then there are its similarityes. You compared to greek (a modern greek i presume??) to New zeeland, but you same time forget that europe isent completely ‘western’ by its own, and the areas where bysantine and later orthodox christianity influenced had evolped quite differently than those under Roman church and later under different protestant camps. If you compare New Zeeland to Belgia you will find a better match. Greece is ‘western’ by politically, but quite strongly commited to the eastern (and this I mean eastern european) hemisphere in other accpects.

You don’t find those aspects in many “new world” Western cultures.

I dont? well how would you then descripe, well lets say North american religious map, if not by result of European post-feadal religious reform?? And how you would decripe the philoshopic values of US constitution, if not a direct (if not linear, more of a rip off) portray of acient greek ideologyes and values?

But thanks for revialing this thread that almoust managed to turn (once again) into bloody warfield between me and chinawihte…hope we can carry on civilised manners

“…And the last fight let us face!”

    so shall it be so

The definition of culture is fine with me, typical dictionary mambo jambo, but I would add onto it the dialectic relationship towards civilication, of which culture we are talking about. Couse this whole thread’s purpose was to determen why is the western civilisation rose to the power. There isent any proplems for my behalv for understandings, but do remember that I have always talked about the roots and basis of that culture, not the contets of it. There we need the civilication element along…
