AP4331A is indeed the Pilot’s Notes for the Varsity T.1. You are welcome to have mine (it’s original with amendments to 13/11/1965). Aviation News produced a booklet (Mini-Monograph) on the Varsity, this includes individual aircraft histories. If you wish PM me with your address & I’ll send the PN & copy of WJ897’s service history.
Kind regards,
Bill
My father (Master Pilot RAF) died in February & the local RAFA branch supplied an RAF Ensign & the British Legion provided a guard of honour. So try the RAF Association. My dad served with 70 squadron during the war & the current 70 overflew the burial ceremony with a C130 Hercules – low & slow & dipped a wing. You can imagine the emotions.
Kind regards,
Bill

“Production Stirling Mk Vs were finished in Dark Slate Grey & Extra Dark Sea Grey & had Azure Blue undersurfaces” – M J F Bowyer, The Stirling Story. Suggest it is this scheme (also seen on Halifax CVIIIs) faded by the sun. Later Mk Vs were aluminium finish.
Two Willies
Top photo (& the panels in the Canadian War Museum) is NP707 QO-W, 432 Squadron.
Bottom is PN240 6U-W, 415 Squadron. Both based at RAF East Moor, North Yorkshire & painted by one Thomas E. Dunn.
Info from a smashing book – RAF & RCAF Aircraft Nose Art in World War II by Clarence Simonsen.
Dust jacket of Wellington at War –
“Chaz Bowyer is the successful author of a number of titles in Ian Allan’s acclaimed At War series, and in Wellington at War he provides a remarkable portrayal of a remarkable aircraft”
and written by a remarkable man.
Sorpe Dam
I saw a programme some years ago about the Sorpe Dam, because it was basically an earth bank wider at the base, it is now considered the bombs would not have been able to breach it had they all been dropped, the Mohne Dam was a concrete construction and more brittle.
The Air Staff produced a report in April 1943- “Economic & Moral Consequences of the Destruction of German Dams”. Here’s a few extracts from the Economic Effects;
“The destruction of this dam (Mohne) would not necessarily have any large or immediate effect on the supply of industrial & household water in the Ruhr region”.
“The Sorpe dam is essentially complementary to the Mohne dam & its simultaneous or subsequent destruction would reinforce the effects of the destruction of the Mohne dam……For this reason the destruction of both dams would be worth much more than twice the destruction of one & it is most strongly urged, if operational possibilities hold out any reasonable prospect of success, that an attack on the Mohne dam be accompanied, or followed as soon as possible, by an attack on the Sorpe dam”.
Here I suggest is the reason for using Upkeep in a manner for which it was not designed. See: After the Battle book – “The Dams Raid – Through the Lens” from which I have quoted.
FMA63 Pampa 2000 (Argentine jet trainer rather like an Alpha Jet). August 1992 (I think) at Bournemouth/Hurn airport when practising for Farnborough, pilot killed when aircraft didn’t complete loop. I was working for Lovaux at the time & we provided support for the FMA Farnborough appearance.
Well done Royal Air Force. Less impressive were the royals – not one in the uniform of the RAF.
Thanks for replies.
The aircraft I was thinking about was an A340. I know people on such a flight when it was announced that they were jettisoning fuel & had to RTB.
Must have been a tense time 🙁
Tense! Say that again. Noticed something amiss when the flaps didn’t retract & we kept on circling. The crew was obviously somewhat engaged & it was some time before the Captain said they had a problem – but never in the whole flight told us what the problem was. Back at LHR we only picked up rumours. Credit to AM as they packed all of us to a decent hotel – with meal & wine thrown in. Before departure next day in the same aircraft – Captain announced he would double check the extension/retraction of the flaps.
I’ve never seen a report on this incident – is there one?
I was on an Air Mauritius A340 from LHR in June 2004 that had flap retraction problems. Ended up circling off Brighton for 1/2 hour dumping fuel before landing back.
