The Australian Army will be equipped with 12 new troop lift helicopters under a $1 billion project approved by the Howard Government, Prime Minister John Howard and Defence Minister Robert Hill announced today.

“The purchase of these new helicopters will include a support contract that may last for up to 20 years, and the overall Australian industry component of this project is expected to exceed $300 million,” Senator Hill said.

1 billion for 12 choppers? Is it in US Dollars? Do those 20 years of support cost that much? It’s like 85 million per unit.. It can’t be in USD. Or is it? ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

    ACHTUNG

Although these next pics were taken in Cape Town, South Africa, itยดs a French Navy Vessel A 630 “Marne”, a auxiliary ship.

I read in a Mozambican newspaper that it will help with the transport of two light patrol vessels that are being donated to Mozambique in conjunction with France.

SAS Amatola / F 145. Sorry, not only the weather was miserable, but this angle was also impaired by those masts..

Not only could it burn through jamming, but it could kill deer at like 500 feet when on the ground ๐Ÿ˜€

And these are the same neighbours that snub us when ASEAN meets!

Sorry, but ‘being sensitive’ is utterly pointless! Apeasement is what eventually led to East Timor having to be helped out by the ADF, when their independence was threatened with indirectly Indonesian-backed anarchy back in 1999. Australia has learned, but from the 70’s. Australia has the US firmly in it’s corner, perhaps even stronger now than ever before since the end of WWII. With that, there is little chance Howard is going to make defence decisions based on how the region feels, nor does he have to. If the region doesn’t like it, stiff…!! ๐Ÿ˜ก

But wd1 has a good point when he says that a more careful choice of words wouldn’t harm Aussie interests, while keeping Asian neighbours calm.
