Hint: The international intervention was UN-led, and it envolved many countries apart from Australia.

Not saying that they don’t think about the oil there: one’s gotta only look at how the negotiations with the E. Timorese gov. for the rights over the oil fields were conducted ( almost as one would say “at gun-point”).

    OIL

Thats was what East Timor was about, support/arm a local population against Indonesia (not that I really care about that country) – make it a basket case – get international support – then make it a proxy – then get its oil….

Right now the Aussies are strongarming their way into “helpless” East Timor’s offshore oilfields.

I have worked with/managed global projects that had a large Aussie team composition. Good people to hang out with at the bar, not too productive in the office….

You really don’t have a clue of what happened in E. Timor in the last 30 years, do you ?

I remember seeing an image of that french UAV project on a news report in AFM a few years ago.

IIRC it was called AVE or something like that.

Well the Americans sold the F-16 ( full spec) to Venezuela in the early 80s, so I don’t see any big generic restriction there. Of course it all depends on what your government attitude towards the US is/was… πŸ˜‰

Under the Monroe Doctrine the US has achieve militarily supremacy in Latin America, thanks to a superior technology and a more developed economy the US has keep an Arms Embargo to the Latin American Nations, contrary to east and souther Asian where India and China have achived first rank militaries, the current state of the aerospace industries in latin america with the exception of Brazil are completly Frozen, the Air Amrs of nations like Mexico or Argentina are at least 30 years behind the current military development, nations like Mexico still rely in the venerable DC-3 and a few F-5Es force self defense, other like Chile have a nascent Aerospace industry but the reality only Brazil posses an truly developed industry.

And are you telling that the poor state of most of the region’s airforces is due to an US arms embargo ?

    That’s a very poor excuse…

BTW, are there any news about the F-X brazilian project ?

    Totaly new build.

The ESSM ( despite its name) has little to do with the original Sea Sparrow.

    RIM-162 ESSM

Hey, do not forget that the missile’s initial speed ( right after the launch, when the rocket ignites) would be Va, in the opposite direction in which you want the missile to go. Therefore, the missile would take longer to reach Vm ( in the direction of the plane b) ), which would mean a decrease in range compared to “normal” situations . 😎

    ….

I don’t know how many he had, but the number of French troops who landed in Normandy was something in the neighborhood of 12. The “Free French” played virtually no role in the liberation of France, except turning their noses at the British vintages and cooking while taking a 4 year break from war in Britain.

Open a history book or site. Then look upon who were the first allied soldiers entering Paris in 1944. Then look for the composition of the allied forces that landed in Southern France in August of that year. Then, finally, try to find who were the allied right flank in the drive into Germany and who took Bavaria, in 1945.

    Then you might learn something.
But why am I bothering ?

Yes, it was the ex-USS Pheonix, of the Brooklyn class.

In the 70s she went through a refit, recieving british Seacat missiles and new radars. I donΒ΄t know if the Exocet missiles were ever installed.

    Scorpene (India)
    >>Albacore Hull Design
    >>Greater Diving Depth 300+ meter
    >>Endurance of 55+ days
    >>AIP (Indians prefer the German Fuel Cell instead of the untested Mesma)
    >> The vessel’s sonar suite includes a long range passive cylindrical array, an intercept sonar, active sonar, distributed array, flank array, a high resolution sonar for mine and obstacle avoidance and a towed array.
    >> Wepons include various French Torpedoes , Exocet Block 3 (180 Km).

The Chilien rejected the Type-209 (1400) the Dolphin class what the Israel have and planning to have 2 more ,in favour of Scorpene ,coz the latter had ,Better Silencing, Greater endurance , better torpedo handling and reload capabilities and increased diving depth.

AFAIK the israeli Dolphin class is a somewhat “special” design outside the lineage of the U209. It, reportedly, has some pretty advanced electronics.

BTW the Portuguese Navy chose the U209PN ( which in reality seems to be a U214, but with better ocean going capabilities) against the Scorpene. 2 subs with an option for another one.

    Here’s a little pic ( it sure looks like a U214!)

    http://web.1asphost.com/Lusitanos/MARINHA/images/U209PN_diagrama.jpg

@Srbin: the whole deal, including weapons, tech support and all the usual stuff, will cost about 1000 million euros. The Scorpene offer was also very close ( but I think a little more expensive).
    Pricey…

Well the SH-2G(A) is a very capable machine in the role but I’d have to say that the Lynx in it’s lastest guise is very nice!

Aren’t the australian SH-2G the ones not equipped with a dipping sonar, only with radar and FLIR for anti-shipping littoral work ?
If so, they do not qualify as ASW birds…
