I am loving the triumphalism of those who think a one-party state is a good idea. Shame it is so misguided. The problem old tories have is it’s not ‘goodbye labour’ at all. It’s hello Labour, goodbye Blairite twits. I think they might find this a considerably more potent force to contend with 🙂

For the record I was referring to the ‘austerity’ thing and the ‘most people’ claim associated with it, not the vote which was what it was.

The vote is an actual measure. However it is important to differentiate between a government being elected under the current system whereby the majority didn’t vote for them, and majority approval for any one of that government’s policies.

The two are clearly not necessarily the same, so ‘most people’ is a bold claim if it refers to approval. If the claim refers to people’s interpretation of policy, it is even harder to corroborate.

That was what I was driving at.

I was just suggesting it might be presumptuous to state what ‘most people’ think, especially when one considers only a minority voted for the government. Whether its relevant or not is another question.

But can you be so sure of what ‘most people’ are now thinking?

The Labour party leadership got that badly wrong (twice, once in the election,and once over JC) – I doubt they will be the last to do so.
